What are flying serrations?

Typically on the front portion of the edge (not necessarily on the spine/top) in a forward cutting grind for better penetration (ie. body armor, heavy cloth, leather, etc.).

Cutting away some material from the spine (top) of the blade without forming an edge can be done for a couple of reasons- to reduce weight, to alter/improve balance, to "thin" the point so it penetrates better... and often just because it looks cool.
