Actually I have three questions. 1. What is the design purpose of the tanto blade? I see them everywhere and wondered what is the purpose. 2. The thumb stud on my small red/black lightning is loose, it spins around. Can it be repaired? 3. Can the finish be renewed on the wooden handled knives, i.e., 700, 500 series? I have a 709 that still works but the nice finish on the handles is dull. Thanks in advance.

Russell, greetings.
How loose is the thumb stud? my wife has 2 and i have 1 with the round stud. there should be enough play so as to rotate when you open the blade. If it feels like it will fall out ,I'd consider sending it in for a checkup.

Russell,
If you want, send in the knife with the wood handle, along with the lightning with the loose thumb stud. I will have them both taken care of under warrantee. The wood should buff up real nice.

Take care,

The advantage of tanto is the strength you can build into the tip, and while I cringe at using the term, it is like a sharpened prybar. It has great penatration skills and it also leaves two different cuts in one wound if used in defense. It is not useful for skinning, but it is great for utility, you just have to get used to using it. All in all, it is a very good tip.

Thanks guy g for the reply. The thumb stud on my knife is very loose. It does not feel like it will come out but rotates very easy. Thnks Joe for your reply. My son-in-law has a hunting knife with the thumb guard broken, if he will get it to me maybe I can send all three. Buck still can't be beat in CS. Thanks Reed for the info on the tanto. I just wondered what the purpose was. I enjoy the forum and am trying to get used to the new format. It is neat but I am a little slow on computer things.
