This past week I visited Vancouver CA with my daughter for our first father/daughter trip.
If possible I try to connect with a knifemaker and make a visit.
On Vancouver Island there are at least 2, so I was able to connect with and make a visit to Dave of Crossed Heart Forge known on BF as islandblacksmith. I like to make a personal connection whenever I can.
I met up with Dave at his forge shop midday for about an hour and we simply talked while he performed some magic on a piece of steel. Dave was accomodating and it was a pleasure to meet with him. Amazingly there was no power equipment whatsoever in his shop area. Most of the shop taken up my a huge massive anvil and the charcoal forge.
I placed an order with Dave for a smaller utility knife which should be completed soon.
I encourage you to check out his website and Dave's work using reclaimed steel.
We had some dialogue about the use of known steel vs older reclaimed steel which is fundamental to his bladesmithing and Dave makes a great case for his chosen method. I won't even begin to paraphrase his thoughts here. Dave I hope you will jump in with some education on this matter
Dave has some recent posts that highlight his work and capabilities.
some pics here of my quick visit.
thanks
