Hey guys...I'm on the hunt and was wondering if anyone could assist. I'm looking for a Tanto fixed blade in the under or a lil above the $100 range. I bought a Spyderco Lum Tanto and I found that a lil on the small side. I was looking for something in the 5-6 inch range. I saw the Cold Steel Kobun and was curious about that one... Any thoughts on the Kobun?

cold steel knives are tanks
forever solid and strong
they will outlast you

The CS Kobun is a pretty good knife, as long as you get one of the older AUS-8A steel versions. It would really be worth your time to save up your money, and buy one of the heavier Cold Steel 6" Tantos (AUS-8A), 'tho, as they are totally excellent.

Muela "Kendo 15" ? #1 and #2 in the picture. Blade length = 150 milimeters (5.9 ") and handle length is 130 milimeters, according to the webpage (i'm not posting the link to the webpage so i don't get yelled at for "advertising - speaking of advertising, *don't* buy at the stoe where this picture is from, you can get these cheaper in the US; i got mine cheaper FROM the US, with all the customs duties and shipping ... ).

I would like to point out, in case you didn't know, that the Kobun is intended as a boot knife. It is very thin, and if you don't like the size of the Lum, you may have some issues with this one.
One you may want to check out is the Nimravus Tanto from Benchmade. It's set to retail at $160, but you will find it considerably less on the internet.
If this is a piece inteded for actual serious combat, Then the money is in the Tactical Tanto from Hanwei all the way. http://casiberia.com/cas_website/product_details.asp?id=KH2092 Retails at $124, this is a really kick ass piece. But it's very high carbon, so you will need to take care of it.
If you are looking for a tanto that will just make for an awexome beater, then this Kabar retails at $71, and still has 1095 carbon steel.

I will back all these three choices 100%.

Knifeclerk, when did KABar come out with that, It's the first one of their versions using plastic handles etc... that really speaks to me.
Lagarto

That ka-bar is part of thier Impact series. I picked up a D2 spear point with micarta scales off Ebay and love the thing. The grip feels pretty good in the hand but being micarta it was a tad slippery so I took the scales off and para-cord wrapped the handles. Loving it.

Here's a long list of Tanto fixed blades.

I have heard good things about the SOG Tsunami also. The TOPS tantos arn't cheap but they have lots of different tanto models.

I have been looking at a CRK&T Hissatsu though. Very distinctive looking and the price is not going to dent your wallet.

Really neat picture on A.G. Russels site.

Cold Steel Kobun Carbon V blade is a fantastic knife. Knifeworks.com has 'em for $59.

The SOG Tsunami would be ultra fine if they just didn't use AUS 6. It makes me sad. Consequently, that's also what the Hissatsu from CRKT uses. However it does have a great design.

I agree, sometimes I get really peeved seeing a great design with such time and care put into it, getstuck with such a middle of the line steel. I would love to see the Tsunami with either BG-42 or D2. CPM S30V would really be cool. And put the finger guards on both sides. just having it on the primary side makes it look unbalanced. I liked the loook better when it didn't have the gaurd.

Would I use it without the guard, no. I like my fingers just the way they are. The Hissatsu atleast has a swell before you reac the blade. Also I would like to see th hissatsu get a better steel like O1 or S30V. Just anything other than AUS. :(

Yeah, I agree. And what is it about Columbia River, anyway? They have some terrific designs, but..... would it really raise the price of their knives THAT MUCH to put in a better steel? I'm not even talking S30V, I'd be happy with a good 440C, even 1095 for crying out loud!
