Any recommendations on a tanto blade folder with uncoated blade, plain edge blade no bigger than 3.5", for under $75.00 or a little above? Just for light EDC tasks, no hard use.

The newer version (Pre order at this time I think) of the Cold Steel medium voyager tanto (about $36.00) has a 3" AUS 8 blade with a triad lock (super strong lock) but unfortunately the blade has a stone washed finish.

There are different types of stone washed finishes some on the shiny side like the Sebenza look almost satin and others look closer to bead blasted. I am not sure which type of stone washed finish the voyagers use.

Weight is about 3.2 ounces the handles are black grivory (similar to zytel supposably stronger) the handles are lined with 6061 heat treated aluminum inside.

The blade is Japanese made but judging from the low price everything else is probably made and assembled in Taiwan.

This is an excellent buy regardless.

The older version is an all Japanese made standard lock back (not as strong as a triad lock) with unlined zytel handles of a different shape (this handle looks prettier to me but the newer has better strength and ergonomics.) The blade steel is AUS 8 (the older version of the Japanese made ones) or VG 1 (newer versions but not latest) they come with a shiny satin finish (uncoated.) These may still be in stock but I am not sure how much they sell for.

I did see a website that was selling a VG 1 version for $59.00 but they were out of stock.

If you look hard enough, you might find a Benchmade tanto Griptillian for under $75. I'm not sure, but BM may make a Mini-Grip in tanto configuration. I got my standard Grip on sale at the local brick and mortar knife store for $70.

Kershaw Tanto Blur is around $50-$60.I think it only comes with a combo edge though.

I thought I saw a Tanto plain blade Kershaw Blur at WallyWorld last night - but I do believe it was a black blade.

I would highly recommend the Tanto Groove even though the blade is coated. The unconventional tanto shape preforms very well.

tanto blur, minigrip and storm come to mind. I'd recommend you save and get the 0400 though. You can find them nildly used for 100

+1 on the 0400. that is one awesome knife. they can be found for 100 new.

as far as the coating goes, i tried to scratch the coating off my ZT with a knife, and i couldn't.

A friend of mine used it to cut some magnesium that he had to cut, and he used his knife for it. he still hasn't bothered to sharpen it.

S.O.G. Trident Tanto tf-6. You can get em on eBay in Satin finish for about $65. Only problem is that the blade is 3.75", but its lightweight, and should serve you well.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I've narrowed it down to between the Cold Steel Medium Voyager Tanto and the Benchmade Mini-Griptilian Tanto. Leaning heavy towards the BM.
