Tanto Handle Removal

I have an old Taylor cutlery steel handled tanto. I believe it is a copy of a Knife Cold Steel put out in the 80’s.
The knife has a metal handle and black coating, (that I sanded off).
Do any of you have a suggestion on how to get the handle removed from the blade? I would like to remove the handle and make my own. Anyone here ever do this? Suggestions please. Thank you. -john

Does a magnet stick to the handle? Can you scratch it easily, with the point of a knife for instance? The handle is likely to be zinc.

I hope you realize the knife is junk. (Although a few of the newer Taylor knives are not too junky, all the older ones are.) No matter what you do with it the blade will still be soft surgical stainless that won't hold an edge very well. As long as you know that, might as well have some fun with it.

It sounds like one of those junkers with a zinc alloy handle cast onto the blade. That stuff is so soft it wouldn't be too much work to cut it off with a hacksaw. If you have any kind of power saw available it'll be easy.

Clamp the full blade in a vise. Heat the handle with a propane torch. It will either melt (BE CAREFUL!) or slide off. The blade should not be affected, as the vise will draw off the heat.

if it is a wood handled tanto, i would use finger nail polish remover. glue will desolve into a paste.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
The handle is not magnetic, must be zinc.
Cougar, I know it’s a piece of crap, thus why I want to experiment with it. Thanks for making sure I knew though, (it did say “Hand Made” on the blade). ;)

Once again, I appreciate the responses, they gave me the info I was looking for.
Thanks -john
