Hi,
Gonna buy my first Sebbie and was going to purchase the small classic, but came upon a limited ed.(400) Sebbie Tanto in a small size. Anyone have any thoughts on the Sebbie Tanto ?

Mrdi,

Welcome to the forums,

I carry a large CR NICA tanto daily at work and the knife does everything I ask of it and looks classy while doing it.
The small version should work well for an every day carry size in a front pocket.

If you like the more specialized tanto blade shape you can't do much better than the Chris Reeve NICA version. Good Luck!

I was going to get a tanto, but people here told me it does not cut as well as the normal Sebenza blade. From the looks of the two I would have to agree, but knowing there are only going to be 400 (and they look cool to boot) made the choice hard. Maybe one day I will go tanto:).

Thanks for your Interesting comment Toolin. I thought perhaps the Tanto would be a better all around cutting blade. I haven't had any experience with the Tanto shape, it just looks functional. I intend to use this as my primary EDC this summer on a trip to the Pacific Northwest, just basic everyday camping and fishing stuff, so the best all around blade is what I'm after along with a size that will fit in the front pocket of my shorts.

Recoil, sounds like you're familiar with the Tanto shape and you call it specialized. What does it's speciality happen to be. My intent is to cut line, clean a few trout and other normal camping type small knife chores.
Thanks,
Mrdi
By the way would a steel keep a Sebenza sharp for a five week summer trip?
Cheers

Mrdi,

The Tanto shape lends itself particularly well to some self defense applications and is better suited for piercing due to the strong tip.
In my line of work,(public safety) the tanto shines.
The standard sebenza blade is a better all around, utility blade and would be better for your camping needs.
There are many sharpening systems available, it's best to ask your knife's manufacturer which field sharpener they reccommend.

hope this helps.
PS- This is a great forum for getting advise, however, opinions will vary greatly as to steel type, blade shape and knife materials. Try to handle any knife before buying.

I carry a large NICA daily. I am not a public servant, like Recoil. I am a professional woodworker. I love the NICA because it works like a skew-cut chisel. I also carry at least one other small knife, too, for more traditional cutting. In my opinion, once you start buying Reeve knives, you'll eventually own more than one!
Good luck!

I think that the tanto blade begins to lose utility in the small size over its regular blade cousin. It is important in a small folder to get as much useful edge as possible. The regular small Sebbie is for me right on the edge of being too small for the general use tasks that it is called upon to perform. Not that it can't get the job done, but that for some cutting chores a larger blade would make the job a bit easier. That said, it is still my EDC because of its inconspicuous size and yet excellent steel and performance edge, which mitigate the minor shortcomings. The small tanto sacrifices some of this useful edge for a tip that is designed for piercing. If that is what you need, then go for it! But I find the large tanto Sebbie is a better balanced design with greater utility, with sufficient blade edge to remain a good cutter/slicer and that strong point for making a statement!
