Just got mine the other day. I'm hooked!:D

Never owned a tanto before but I'm glad I decided on it, one of the reasons I wasn't going to get a Zaan was that I just didn't need to replace my Lg Classic. It suited most of my needs, but the thought of having a beefier CRK folder (the Umnumzaan) for some field work I do was appealing so....enter the Tanto Umnumzaan.

One issue that I'm hoping someone who has one can assist me on is the sharpening of a tanto edge, well more specifically the CRK tanto edge. Which in my opinion is more of a zero edge. If fact, it almost appears to be a convex grind down to a zero edge. Wicked cool....but difficult for me to sharpen on my Jet Tool wet/slow grinder. Right now I'm over at toolsforworkingwood.com looking at their 3m micro abrasive film (Scary Sharping Method) but if the primary grind of the tanto edge is convex then a abrasive film on glass won't work.

Any thoughts?

It is convexed on a radius...don't touch it with a wheel grinder.

I use a 1x42 belt...they are priceless for sharpening (IMO) you shouldnt have do do anything but strop it to keep it sharp unless you damage the edge.

I use a 800 grit belt on the slack portion and polish with a leather belt and compound.

Congrats on the tanto...they rock !!..clockman has one commin also and i hope he finds the luv. :)

Yep....that's what I was thinking. The more I look at it the more I see that familar belly that convex grinds have. That and the zero edge will force me to come up with a "leather" solution, since I'm not fortunate enough to have a belt grinder. I really want to keep the tanto edge as sharp as it came , first tanto I've heard of that you can actually shave with. What I've seen and heard tanto edges are usually not as sharp as the primary edge,

Oh well.....time to invest in a leather strop. Hmmmmmm, I wonder if my leather wheel would work with some micro paste?

Oh yeah....thanks Mark. Reading things that you and the other CRK fans here in this forum convinced me to take the plunge.

It's beefier than my Sebbie so I feel better about carring it when I'm field testing the products I work on. But it still has the fit and finish that Chris is known for. I'm just hoping it doesn't take over as my primary EDC....my Sebbie will be pissed!:p

I would be careful with leather wheels as they are hard...when using the belt sander i use the Slack part of the belt above the platen as it deflects and conforms.

You can pick up belt sanders for under a hundred bucks...leather belts are about 15.00 and 800-1000 grit belts are under 5.00 each.

It's a really good investment for sharpening....i used to be a hard headed stone guy until i found the belt...now it's a breeeeze to sharpen and polish edges.
