I have tried several times to resharpen the tanto grind CQC-15, I nicked the balde the other day and decided to resharpen it, the main edge will shave the hair from a nats behind, but for the life of me I can not get an edge on the tanto portion of the blade.:o

I have tried a DMT flat whet stone, a diamond rod, a spyderco sharpmaker, all to no avail and advise for an Emerson newb.

tanto blades are fun to sharpen. i have 2 customs that a friend made and gave to me. i had the honors of sharpening them both. i use cardboard wheels and its practice and skill to get them right. doing them by hand with stones will be even harder. you would have to work on keeping 2 angles held in order to keep the edge square to the stone.

Describe your sharpening technique.

hard to put into words.

with the flat stone, I was holding teh knife in my right hand and was using a corner of the stone to sharpen the tanto portion of the blade. with the diamond rod I followed the proceadure on emersons website. and finally with the sharpmaker, I was using the brown rods in the 40* side and holding the blade slightly to the right and drawing it down the stone.
I just tried the emerson method again now I have no edge on any portion of the blade.
I feel like just sending it back to emerson!

Spidy---I use water stones and draw backwards until I get a burr. Then, strop it off. I hope this helps. It does take practice. Don' get frustrated. Have you thought about a Tom Krein Grind??

thanks for that tip, just a bit hard to apply to a recurve blade. I got a semi edge on the tanto, but now I can't get the edge back on the main.
how much for the krien regrind, any pics of one on a 15?

I have the edge so screwed up now that I will either have to get it reground by emerson or get a krein regrind.

i'm a dumbass I should have left well enough alone, and just lived with a few nicks.:(:o

if you have a lot of knives to sharpen and want something different check into the wheels. i have closeup picks of an edge done by the wheels. with a little practice you can even do a recurve. i have a hollow grind custom that easily splits hairs that was done on the wheels. it took me about a week of practice before i felt i was ready to try it on a good knife but they are well worth the investment. you can also sharpen scissors with proper instructions. i also sharpen knives. one that size wouldnt cost much. send me an email if you are interested. rje196021@gmail.com

Yes, you might be a dumb ass but its not all bad :p:D

I f,hate sharpening recurve blades !!! all my lazy ass friends always get me to do it for them

For the recurve area you really need to be using a rounded rod or stone to get the best results. Take your time to keep on the right angle and keep the edge bevel flat so you can work a burr over the whole edge, this can take a long time if you use a fine stone or ceramic rod so be patient. Once you get an even burr along the whole edge fold it over with a lite pass using a fine ceramic rod. Then give it a strop, a dry strop like card board is fine but if you can get a bit of leather or even a bit of pine (wood) with a bit of cutting paste you will have much better results.

The tanto tip should be the easy part !

Use a flat stone and push/pull a burr over the edge and again give it a light pass or two then strop to clean the edge up.

If all ells fails Tom Krein can work his magic for a reasonble price and get you back on the silly side of sharp ;) I hope you get things sorted out, i know how nippy it can be

Yer no dumb-azz. We've all done it. Let Emerson regrind it or send it to Tom K. Tom can show you a pic of an HD that he has done. $35. Report back.

I'm addicted; I have another one (CQC-15) on order as soon as it arrives I'm going to send it in to Emerson. I jsut feel naked w/o it. I am carrying a kershaw now and it just feels wrong even though its a speed safe. The emerson is just so quick, ergonomic and hefty, I can't do with out one!

got my backup on friday, so I'm sending my other one out to emerson this week to be sharpened. I just couldn't send it off to emerson w/o another to tide me over.
