Hi!
Some people told me that tantos are great and very tough knives. I have a chance to buy SOG Tsunami and I wonder if it's good enough. I need that knife for light chopping, cutting things, stabbing (for fun :) ) and for martial arts training.

I Love Tanto's, Alot of the guys here hate them, but for MA it's fine, for chopping not so fine, for stabbing, great. Basic cutting is fine, but all day cutting or hunting or game cleaning or fish not so fine, but doable, Tanto's are for looks, tip strength, and MA or whatever else you like them for.

What do you think about Cold Steel Recon Tanto in booth steels (aus 8 & Carbon V)? The aus 8 version is more good looking for me, I saw that knife without teflon coating and it's very pretty. In other case, Carbon V is more tough and holds edge better

I like the Sog Tsunami but didn't care for the poweder coat finish. The older original model without the poweder coat looked better to me. The biggest problem with the Tsunami is the lack of a guard. It's a cool knife if you can pick one up fairly cheap.

For a low price you can also pick up the Chen Hanwei Tactical Tanto and is has a nice guard for protection. Do a web search for that model.

PZ, I bought a Cold Steel Recon Tanto in Carbon V years ago and it was shaving sharp right out of the box. It's a very thick, heavy duty knife and the price isn't so high that you'll be afraid to use it. Mine has served me very well. I say go for it.

No one should go into the woods with only one knife. Tantos are not good hunting knives because they have no round edges for scraping. A tanto is good for cutting light brush (mini-machete) and as a weapon where one needs to thrust. If I had to go up against a bear with a knife, it'd probably be tanto, and people have used knives against bears, and a surprisingly large number have been effective. Still, I prefer a good magnum.

The tanto has two cutting edges that combine to form a strong tip. Some have a rounded section more like conventional knives, while some users prefer to have a secondary edge that breaks away and up. Most American tantos are like the latter, while many Asian tantos are like the former. I like both kind, plus I like the Cold Steel Recon Tanto with the Carbon V blade. I also like double-edged blades with sharp, narrow tips and Bowie type blades. Overall, I don't like false edges and will sharpen them when able.

This is great example or marketing power. This blade has nothing behind their claims. Japanese roots, Special Penetration power - all fictional. But so promoted and so many believe this that it became more real then real tanto!

Thanks, Vassili.

Thanks, Vassili!! RESEARCH what a Tanto IS! A Tanto is a jinto blade. A blade for battle. Japanese blade history is very interesting!
