Broke the tip off a kitchen knife digging in a coconut.
So I busted out the dremel and gave it a tanto profile.

Looks like you did an excellent job on the knife. Not having ever owned a tanto blade or even seen one other than in pictures, my questions are basic. What is the advantage of a tanto style blade in a modern folder? Not knowing that my next question is what are the uses for one in a kitchen knife? I have never seen one for sale, but understand you did this to yours to salvage a good knife with a broken tip. I guess if I knew the reason behind the design, I could understand how to utilize one if I had one, or like you, salvaged a good knife with this design. Inquiring mind would like to know.

Blessings,

Omar

I read that a tanto blade is designed for stabbing, giving the tip more strength.

I don't think there's any real reason to have one in a kitchen knife, LOL.
I don't own a tanto blade either, other than this one.

Thanks for the kind words as I just "winged it".

I can see it being useful in chopping up things like celery or other hard vegetables into small chunks. Or maybe even starting a slice into a soft skin tomato and then finishing up with the main blade. Who knows, it may become your favorite kitchen all around use knife.
Either way it looks like you did an admirable job.

Blessings,

Omar

Cool man! Nice save. What did you chuck up in your Dremel? Cut off wheel? I used my Dremel the other day to cut the blade on an old knife and it was a nightmare. Much thicker stock than a kitchen knife though and 1095. Ugh...

Yeah, I just used a cut off. Zipped right through, lol, but this was a THIN knife.

Really like the angle you created - most tanto tips are either too shallow or too severe for my taste. You got it just right.
