The only reason to discontinue something is lack of sales. Personally I don’t see how they sell any tantos. My least favorite blade design.
But I’ve missed out on things before so I feel your pain.
As always if you see something you like buy it when you can. Especially if you think it will be a slow seller.

I personally don’t like tantos, I don’t like sharpening them and I don’t like using them. I’m sure there’s some who like them for their own reasons and that’s good but most people I know who use knives don’t care for tanto blades or maintaining them.
A few guys I’ve worked with had tanto blades and they were mis-sharpened to a swept belly till almost no angle point at all. I asked them what happened there and they said it was a pain in the a$$ to keep them sharp at that angled point and then trying to maintain that angle was a pain as well.

I like tantos. the word means what in Japanese short sword or a knife basically..
anyways i like Japanese style ones and American ones. the American tanto has the extra point of two edges coming together. was popularized by Lynn Thompson at cold steel if I remember right. anyways the Japanese ones and there is lots of styles do not have the two edges meet to a point. i could post examples but Google will show the shapes and youll recognize these shapes easily and i doubt will dislike them. so that extra point isn't so important unless ya just want that extra point. Bucks seems to always make American tanto style. unless their sharpener that day is struggling.
I'm in agreement with the op I like when we get them and hate seeing them go away, but if they don't sell, I get that too. its a business to make money and support its staff and owners.

I've had 2..A Strider and a 653. I like the look but never used either one very much. I ended up trading the Strider for a handful of 112's but that was more because it was really heavy for my EDC use. I still have the 653 and Joe put a razor edge on it..because I had trouble sharpening it myself.
