tantos

Cold Steel may not have the best reputation around here, but i like a few of there knives. Specifically the recon tanto is a good knife for the relatively low price.

The Recon Tanto is a good, reliable knife. I have noticed that it does not come as sharp as the SRK. I wonder how easily the edge could be changed (the stock is pretty thick.) My dad owns one of these and even though it sees little use, it's still fun to have around. My biggest problems with it are the same with the SRK: Kraton guard. Under hard use, it chews up my hand. Gloves or no. But then, I have exceptionally soft, girlie hands.

I bought a CS Recon Tanto about three months ago from emergencyoptions.com. When the knife arrived, it was as blunt as a brick. I went to work on it with my Lansky and ended up with a very sharp 30° edge.

I keep it for defensive purposes only (in South Africa it is next to impossible to get a handgun licence) and haven't tested its edge retention; want to keep it as sharp as possible. It is great for cutting thumbs with though!

Excellent knife, give it a go.

I have the recon in aus8 and like it. I find that I carry the aus8 voyager instead for work. I love the tanto for a sharp scraper at a great angle. I work as a handyman and the voyager tanto is a perfect companion to my leatherman. The recon is a knife I think most will like!

I have a cold steel recon and it's a crappy knife. The finish was chipped on the edge out of the box, the edge wasn't all that great, and the lock was terrible. They should have just liscenced the axis lock from Benchmade instead of stealing it and doing it poorly. I had blade play on both axes, not to mention the huge screw they use for the lock is wobbly and just too big (easy to disengage the lock accidentally).

All in all it was an OK knife for the money I guess (since I got it cheap) but I wouldn't buy another and wouldn't carry the thing.

One more thing, the knife is really big. Like scare your friend's and co-workers and get arrested in several states big. For the handle this is nice because I have huge hands (it's actually much bigger than I need) but the blade is just...unnecessary.
