a while back some makers were offered a sample piece of tantung, i got lucky and was also given a sample... let me tell you this stuf is a bear to grind... i cant remember what the rockwell was on this material, but the numbers must be high...my tools are primitve to say the least a sears 2x42 grinder, lots of belts later and a couple of cheapo carbide drill bits and this is what i came up with... i call it the bulldog...

out of curiosity any of of you big guys get to make any thing from this stuf yet? i would love to see it...

that is pretty slick dude.....now I want you to take out to the side of your house and bang the edge hard against one of your water pipes and see how it holds up.....Simonich said its pretty fragile.

i have heard that the first batch of this stuff was fragile... but this knife was made from what they called the improved material, i have put this blade thru the paces...some heavy use at our construction site from rope, filter fabric, plastic banding and even some lite chopping on a 2x4...and its holding a wicked edge ... no problem YET with any edge chipping or deformation... i haven't tried chopping concrete or pipe... i don't know of any blade that can really stand up to that abuse...but that's for someone else to decide

but this blades main purpose for me is a hunting skinner... so far from its performance looks like a keeper to me ... not saying that this tantung is a replacement for talonite or stellite (they rock) ... just another potential knife making Material for special purposes....

I have a chunk sitting on top of my file cabinet......was waaaaaay too busy for the last three months to think about it....maybe this summer when I am not too busy!! (that will happen when I die!!)

chisel -- I like the knife! The name certainly suits it. A powerful little blade!

Sorry for my ignorance, but don't believe I've come across the name "tantung" before. Can you provide a rundown of it's chemical makeup? Is it related to the cobalt based metals?
