Tape on the Handle

So Im new to Kukri knives as a whole but...

does anyone here put tape on the handle to prevent slippage of the fingers, I noticed that many of the handles are polished wood or bone and these materials can be slippery when used.

Just something that was on my mind

I have been taking out a few hundred 1-2" saplings with my kuks and will do around another 80 this afternoon. Have not had issue with loosing my grip performing this task. Have found out that through experience, my grip seems to have loosened on the handle much akin to a pilot's developing control touch starting off as a "death grip" to flying with his just finger tips.

That's a very good analogy Bookie. Handling kuks at first can be a bit intimidating as I'm sure being a pilot would, course even more so.

I did wrap my Pen knife with para cord as the handle was a bit small and the horn handle was pretty smooth.

It's of course not a heavy chopper but still a serious enough knife that you want control.

The cord accomplished my mission very well but I was overcome with guilt and felt it was criminal that some water buffalo would give up his headdress only to have me cover it up.

Soooo, I removed the cord and just sanded it with like 80 grit to reduce the slick. That helped considerable. But of course I wasn't satisfied still. I ended up checkering the handle. It's still a bit smallish but it looks decent and I have the control I want. One of many favorites.

Love to see a picture of that. You do some very nice checkering. I love the skip line checkering on your bowies

Thanks once again Mr. Tall. I was plumb lazy this morning and anxious to get on the chores I didn't get to yesterday.

Thanks to for kind words. I think the background makes it even better.

Holy smokes, Bawanna! That is one fine job on that kuk!! I'm really glad the fellow with the MOST EXCELLENT first name posted it. "Steve" just has a certain ring to it doncha think?

We're in the Cantina, I just checked, so "sorta-related thread veer" is okay, I think.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite TV shows was The Six Million Dollar Man, with Steve Austin.

This special order short-sword came to me, from another forumite, with the satisal handle wrapped in tape. I think he said it was tennis racket tape. I like the look so much that I left the tape in place.

Excellent balance because the handle is full-tang, chiruwa style, and long enough for a variety of grips.

That looks pretty decent too, doesn't take away terribly from the look or most importantly the cool factor.

I think bicycle handle bar tape is pretty similar, maybe even the same stuff. I have some I never opened the package on yet. Don't even remember what I planned to do with it now but it'll maybe come to me someday.

Looks good on your knife.

Ok, I'm changing my name to Steve. I wanna fit in.

Thanks for kind words.
