Tape Review: Pekiti Tirsia, THE CONTRADAS by Tuhon Leo T. Gaje, and Tuhon Nene Tortal

Donna,

I'm glad you posted your review. I've been seriously considering purchasing this tape for a while now, and I think this settles the matter.

I'm going to order it after the holidays.

Thanks,

Dave.

Donna,

Question regarding the man working the balisong on the last part. Is he the same person (Nene Tortal's nephew???) doing the balisong form from the Warriors From Negros video?

I haven't seen the Contradas video but will soon. There's a part from Warriors From Negros where Nene Tortal's nephew is manipulating the balisong.

The guy IS AWESOME. I love the part where he transfer the balisong around his back, under his thigh and around his neck while moving around. His coordination on footwork, body movements and balisong manipulation all together is VERY EXCELLENT. So far the best bali-guy I've seen.

This guy is the real deal. His performance on the balisong is so cool and the sword stuff..... oooohhh so cool. If you've seen it you know what I'm talking about.

Rommel,

This is the tape I have. The balisong skills of that man are amazing. I think he must of owned a balisong from the time he was a baby! It looked like the balisong was a part of him. The "around the neck" move was nice! :-)

This is the same man working with the balisong. This tape is much closer and clearer to see what he is doing. Also, regarding Donna saying that this tape is good for the library if you are a Pekiti Tirsia man is wrong. I think this tape is a must have for any MA person. Truly awesome to watch the old men play when they switched to the sticks. Dave, you should have the tapes by now, what did you think after all?

Hello Forum Members,

I would like to add a few comments on the Contradas tape.
1)This is the only publicly sold tape that contains both Grand Tuhon Gaje and Tuhon Nene Tortal, training together. (There has been a major split between them for some time now)
2)It does teach the basic Contradas directly from Grand Tuhon Gaje.
3)Everything on the tape is done with live blade only!
4) The Balisong man is Rommel Tortal, nephew of GT Gaje and a member of the Dogeaters..
5)When GT Gaje was stateside in the early 70's he was one of the few people who brought over Silat masters to train. Eddie Jaffri was one of the first. Dan Inosanto started training with Mr. Jaffri and then continued on in his never ending quest for training.
6)Buy the whole series! It also contains Tatang Illistrisimo, in his late 70's or early 80's demonstrating his techniques!! Never mind all the other great Kali practitioners, and masters. Awesome tapes for any beginner to expert to have.

Neo_13,

Unfortunately, I don't think any of these tapes are sold anymore.

I'm looking for old footage of either or both Nene Tortal and his nephew Leo Gaje doing their Pekiti Tirsia thing in Negros Occidental. Or some old footage from the 70's era in Queens, New York training.

Anyone has any? Please reply.

Hello Brandon96

There is early footage of GT. Gaje doing the 36 attacks, as well as free flowing with Tuhon Sayoc, at the Sayoc.com website. Tuhon Sayoc has lots and lots of early video footage(70's and 80's) of Pekiti Tirsia(as well as their own Sayoc training etc) being performed by GT. Gaje and old time students. You can email him directly for more information on the early footage at sayoc@sayoc.com. Definitely check out the multimedia section on the website though, you'll enjoy the footage.

Hello Verzejd,
I don't think those tapes are available anymore. They were published by Datu, who later changed to applied combat sciences. If they are out there look them up on the web.
