Tapering Tangs on the Coote - -

Someone not long ago told me on a thread here that the Coote is not well designed for tapering tangs. He is, I think, correct. After revisting Don Cowles' tutorial on tang tapering ( http://www.customknifedirectory.com/CKD_Mainframe.htm?CKD_tut_tapertang01.htm~main ) I became alittle depressed as I searched for a good way to do it on the Coote. However, after attaching a graphite strip to the Coote flat platen something magical happened. It raised the belt out of line with the drive wheel. Now it is easy to taper a tang and without the blade area touching the belt. I am happy now.

Roger you can also use a magnet to hold the blade, getting your knuckles out of the way. Helps a lot.

Dave, I'll try that. That would eliminate the vise grip jaws from biting into the blade spine. Thanks. Saves me a little extra filing and sanding.
