and loading the whole deal down into a torch's barrel as a single unit. Regardless of whether this procedure is practical or not, can it negatively affect the flashlight or batteries (shorten their lifespan, etc)?

I have been using paper wrapped around the batteries with a piece of tape for man years. This also eliminates any rattle/noise to the flashlite. You can re-use the sleeves, too.

I've taped them at the ends as well with masking tape, or clear packing tape.

Never hand any problems with either method.

Less noise, perhaps a change in the balance of the flashlight if you twirl it around.

Are you talking about C and D Alkaline cells in flashlights such as MagLites?

I've often wanted a quick and easy way to load AAs into my Pelican StealthLites in the dark.

SureFire flashlights can have single unit batteries made up of 2, 3, or 4 DL123As. I personally don't need 'em & they're much more expensive than getting them individually.

I used mine this way for 'AA' and 'AAA' sizes. The 4 cell 'AA' are a nuisance so I tape two together.
