Taping Tip

A lot of you guys probably use duct tape to protect the blade during finishing work. Now duct tape is great for this, but allways leaves some heavyier glue residue behind.

To prevent this, just use painters masking tape, green or blue type first. This type of tape is designed to come of easy, without leaving residue.
One layer is enough, then the duct tape. This protects the blade and once you remove it, all comes of clean.

I wish I would have stumbled onto this earlier.

Greetings.

Thomas

Hmmm, I always just wrap the blade in a sheet of newspaper and then tape it up. You can also make news paper sleeves that the blade can be removed from and put back in as needed.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!
I currently don't have a web site but am working on one.
Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms!!!

I'm not a knifemaker [yet], but I used to use a lot of duct tape to cover the sides of the blade when sharpening so I didn't put lots of scratches on them.

Leaves tape residue... just spray a rag with a little bit of Tri-Flow and wipe the adhesive off and it's clean again.

Yes, I used to do the Tri flow routine to, but at very high finishes (1200 grit - 2000) one get's lightly polished areas on the satin finish. ( Not acceptable)

Ralph, very, very, very carefull. This takes quite something, not yet for me, but hope soon.

I just finished my second dagger, bolsters and handle receased on a full tang. So averything has to be pretty much finished before peening the bolsters. This was a challenging one to do. I hope to have some pictures end of this week.

Greetings.

I use duct tape and then acetone to get the adhesive off of the blade. It just comes right off...

Acetone is right up there with WD40 in my opinion. Good stuff!
