Tapmatic again ?

I just got my new-to-me tapmatic 30X and have a slight problem. The shaft/arbor is 5/8 inch and wont fit any of my 1/2 " chucks. There is another rod which came with it that is smaller -but I'm not sure this is a replacement shaft since there is no taper.
Is anyone familiar with changing the shaft of this unit? Is it tapered? If so,what size? If not, how do I get the old one out?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Donald

Donald,

I ran into the same issue. I do not know if the shaft is an integral part of the tapmatic or not but I could not figure out how to change it. I just stuck the whole unit in a lathe and turned it down. I chucked it up in the lathe by the shaft end. When I was done, I just cut the larger remainder of the shaft off. If this is not an option for you, you may want to call the manufacturer to see if they can change the shaft.

If I understand you correctly, it is not part of the tapmatic. You should be able to take a wood block and tap the shaft until it dislodges from the tapmatic. It it has been in there for a long time, it might require some effort and patience.
The people at Tapmatic are very friendly and helpful and will answer any question over the telephone.
Unfortunately, I can not remember the number off hand, but you should be able to do a search online and find the number. Believe they are located in Idaho.
Good Luck,
Jon

Do not hold the Tapmatic arbor in a drill chuck. Isn't meant to do that and the runout couldn't possibly be acceptable. You need to replace the arbor on the Tapmatic with the correct one for the spindle of your drill press/milling machine or whatever machine you're using.

Call Tapmatic. They can tell you if the arbor is a taper mount or a threaded mount and sell you the correct one for your machine.
