I want to add a thumb Disk on my blade,
I know I should drill my hole before Heat Treat,But I was wondering about tapping the hole, should I tap the hole before or after
Heat Treatment.

I am new to all this so I figure the only stupid question is the one I don,t ask.

I tapp all holes before heat treatment - I think you would definatly break a few taps trying to do it after!

good luck

i seriously doubt if you could tap the hole after h/t.....and btw...you should check out the prices of those little tiny carbide taps...breaking one or two of those would put a big dent in your wallet!!!!!!!

Tapping a blind hole for a thumb disk is hard enough to do before the steel is hardened. It will close to impossible after hardening.

Do it before heat treating and make sure that you use a "bottoming tap". Take your time and be real careful when you tap it.

Tom is right about the taps hitting your wallet hard. I broke 2 taps in titanium folder liners last night (got in a rush). They do add up.
