Tapping the tang?

I saw a picture today in a knife magazine of a knife that seems to have the scales attached by tapping directly into the tang.I like to use hex caps on my knives, but I always use standoffs.Threads seem to have a potential for a number of problems to me , does any one do this? The knife is a Wilson combat starlight fighter.

Are you talking a fixed blade or folding knife? Scales can't be attached directly to a tang on a folder since the blade needs to pivot( unless you mean a threaded pivot fastener). Fixed blades however, frequently have scales attached to the tang using threaded hardware. The pin holes aren't actually tapped with threads though, just the bolt/nut that hold the scales on.

When I first started making knives I use to tap the tangs, and use hex screws to fasten my scales on. After a. Few snapped taps and countless head aches I went to buying pivot barrels and drilling to fit a lot less Hassel and head ache.
