Tarani Police Utility Knife BU882BKS

Underwhelming.

Mine won't do anything an Endura won't do for less money.

I'm not really that impressed with them. Zytel scales and a thin liner. As stated above I would rather have an Endura. If they would construct it similarly to their other Strider folders it would be a nice knife.

Buck now has a version with G-10 scales (model 882SBTG CMT). In my opinion, this is what the knife should have had from the start, not Zytel, FRN or whatever type of plastic they use. I don't know what the liners are like on the G-10 versions, but the ones on the plastic "police utilty" model are thin when you consider how thick the blade is. I like the design but with the thin liners and plastic scales, you might as well buy an ATS-34 Buck Odyssey for less. They also have one in 420HC called the "Police Advocate" model priced at $100.00MSRP. Still overpriced in my opinion.

Another thing to consider is the way Buck's linerlocks extend way past the center of the tang almost touching the opposite liner. They do this on purpose to lessen the chance of accidental closure, but it doesn't leave much room for wear. Buck is pretty good about fixing any problems that may develop due to the lockup, but it's one of those thing you either like or don't like.

The liners on the G10 model are thick enough (0.045-0.050") and reviews of the FRN version show that some folks have beat mercilessly on the thinner liners with no loss of fingers. The thumbstud/stop-pins are cool and the ATS-34 spearpoint is a great blade (good as is or thinner). The serrations come right off with a belt sander and a slight recurve to the blade. The lock-up is secure albeit not esthetically pleasing. The right-handed liner is lefty friendly, especially with the reversible pocket clip.

Depending on your needs, other knives may provide better service, but there's a knife (or several hundred) for every hand. If it appeals to you and you've found a good price, try it. If it works, great. If not, sell it and get a Chinook II from Spyderco.

That is good to hear. I may have to check one out. Would be nice to see a plain edge version though.
