I am in central Tx and I was trying to find a target for throwing. I wanted a cross section of a tree, but the trees here don't get very big. I called several landscape and lumber mills. All I could find was a huge scrap of fir, it is in the shape of a block about 15" wide 36" tall and 8" thick. Is this ok or should I try to find a round target? I am new to throwing but want to get my son into it. Thanks, James.

Not many suitable log rounds in SoCal either! I have at times used for hawk and knife throwing a high-density foam archery target with replaceable center pieces. Probably not the cheapest hawk/knife target but when I upgraded to a much better bow target, I thought "what the heck?", might as well get some additional use out of the old foam target. I mounted the foam target on an old, beat up piece of plywood.

A 3 foot piece of log end should do fine, but the target ain't the problem, its around the target a sheet or 2 of plywood will protect windows or the side of your garage if you miss...Of coarse I haven't ever missed and this surely hasn't ever happened to me,....honest or not, don't throw at anything you want to keep nice.

I made a target out of 2" x 2" scrap timber.

Cut lots of 4" long pieces, and put them in a frame, end grain showing.
Use an old pallet or something similar to make the frame - say 24"x24".
Fix the frame to plywood or similar, or even planks, to stop the
4"x2"x2" pieces from being knocked out, put the pieces into the frame
(end grain showing). Tiny spot of glue on the bottom of each to hold.

This makes it easy for the axe/hatchet/tomahawk/etool/knife/spear/arrow
to stick into the target, and the bits of wood are easily replaced.

I hang this on my archery target - just in case I miss.
(Never happened !)

I use 4x4's cut to length (about 36", iirc) then clamped together with pipe clamps. As the target gets chewed up, I can turn the sections, move them around, ect.
