Tarnish and Rust removal.

To remove, start with WD-40 on paper towel. Just spray on enough to soak the blade. Let it sit for about five minutes to penetrate, and wipe off. You may need to repeat this four or five times.

Another option for rust is a bathroom cleaner called CLR (Calcium, Lime and Rust remover). I've had good results with it.

If that's not strong enough, switch to Flitz polish.

To prevent rust in the future, use Renaissance Wax.

brasso, metal glo, flitz, all work well for removing rust and tarnish. Just use a clean cotton cloth, and a little "elbow grease". For heavier deposits use any one of these with a buffing wheel on a dremel.

pretend to ENJOY the rust. If it were a 300 yr old Katana tang, the blacker the better. (IT ISN'T A KATANA IS IT?)

I use 3-in-one oil. I'm a little hesitant of using something as strong as WD-40, but then
I've never used it on a knife. I do use it to clean through concrete and other buildup on
rotor hammers and scarfiles in order to get them apart to repair them. They have never seemed to mind. I use 3-in-one on the threads I put back in though. Anyone have thoughts or negative experiences with either of these solutions.

3 in 1 oil is good stuff! I use it a lot and it works great to protect knives from rust and lubricate mechanisms.

I've got a question that crosses over into gun finishes... I got a pistol out the other day that I hadn't shot in quite a while (2 years or so). It's not blued, it's stainless - but... it had some rust around both of the sights and down in some recesses in the slide. I was amazed since it's stainless and I oiled it up really good before I put it up. I got the rust off (with WD-40, Hoppe's, steel wool and a little elbow grease) My question is - can you use Renaissance Wax on guns? Will it protect them against rust?

I was pretty ticked to find the rust on that pistol... I maintain my knives, tools, firearms, etc. with a passion! What can I use to prevent that from happening again?

Yes, and Yes.

Fine firearms are one of the suggested applications for Ren Wax. But, keep in mind that it is just wax and will not withstand firing the gun. After each firing, you'll need to clean your gun and re-wax it. But, if you're going to store a gun for two years, Ren Wax would be a good choice.

Thank you so much! :)

For rust, starting off with an oil like WD40 works well. For tarnish I find that Nevr-Dull works extremely well. Be it rust or tarnish I finish up with Nevr-Dull. The Cape Cod Metal Polishing Cloth, like NevR-Dull, works by chemical action. The Cape Cod also claims to help prevent tarnish/corrosion. If I need an abrasive cleaner I go with Flitz. Using a Scotch Brite pad can also help. I like to stay away from abrasives if possible due to uniformity of finish.
