Hey i have a question. I own an original rat cutlery rc-4 and its never really been used but the screws that hold the handle slabs have started to tarnish pretty bad. Any ideas why?

because they're uncoated carbon steel.
some folks hit them with a cold blue pen (same for the laser engraved markings on the blade) others replace them with stainless screws -- I think sizes are given in the FAQ at the top of the forum. If I'm wrong, someone will be by soon enough to correct me. :)

wild. you got me, bro.
I'd vote for scotch brite pad and some soap to clean off the oil then cold bluing or krylon - then put them back on.

It's because the knife is longing to be used. Much like a child, ESEE knives will "act out" for attention if their not getting it from you.

tarnish isn't bad, the patina coat hardens the surface towards farther oxidation. It may not look factory new, but if it's not seeing any use anyway, then that should be the least of your worries.

Can you post a pic of this. I'd like to see it since this is the first we have heard of this.

Thanks,

Funny you post this, I just scraped and oiled the screws on my Junglas. There was rust on the inside of the hex, and the flat/exposed screw head had a bit of rust and tarnish also. I snipped one end of a Q-tip off and used the plastic end to scrape the rust out..the cotton end I dipped in some 3 in 1 oil and covered the screws in that. I didn't think to snap pics though..

I've only noticed this on my Junglas..I own every other ESEE blade and never have had rust in the screws.

They look much better now after half an hour of cleaning with some steel wool and 3 in 1.

Everyone be sure when you are taking handle screws off and putting them back to coat the threads with Lock Tite. Mike
