Posted this on another forum but thought you guys may find it of use. I originally did it at the request of Ronnie Sunshines for a package they sell but have since made it available to download.

The link http://public.me.com/studiomw converted to pdf by sandbender and hosted by overlander30 use the password 'bushcraft' to access the download.

Also available through woodsmoke here

Hope people find in useful.

Thanks for this, I've been planning to try out the hammock thing once it warms up here.

Page 106 rules. :)

I just can't sleep in a hammock. I have tried several different ones, but for me, its just not an option.

I know I love the idea and simplicity of the hammock but I just know I couldnt sleep in one either :(

Dude... That thing is just awesome. Exactly what I needed to try this out.

A LOT of knots to know - but all REALLY good knots.

I felt the same way. Then I put one up in my garden and got used to snoozing in it in the afternoons (While reading a book and enjoying a tipple). When I used it for camping, I was already accustomed to it and I dozed off easily enough. It was cheap and eventually broke. I miss that hammock.

EDIT: Sorry bushblade, I forgot to thank you for the tutorial. When I get a new one, I'll give the instructions a go.

A couple companies offer the whole hammock tarp and bug netting deal pretty cheap. It packs so small I am really tempted to try it. I figure if it doesn't work for me I could always sell in the for sale section here and recoup my money.

I haven't gotten a chance to read bushblade's tutorial, but I *AM* a very avid (and vocal :p) hammock camper.

Very very few people are completely unable to sleep in a hammock. You just have to find the right kind of hammock. The trick for laying flat in a hammock, without the banana-back shape, is to get a big, wide hammock, and lay diagonally. The further away you are from laying along a line connecting the two trees, the flatter you will lie.

There are also many varieties of hammocks beyond the simple rope hammocks most people picture. Built in bug nets, storage shelves, a variety of insulation options, bridge hammocks that are so flat you can sleep on your stomach... there are many, many options for hammock camping, and if you find the one that fits your needs, you will get the most comfortable sleep you will ever have in the woods.

Tonight I will be sleeping in the Rockies, at 9500 feet elevation, in a hammock. I expect lows to be around 10 degrees. I will be toasty warm. And I will sleep very comfortably. Hammocks rule :D

Is it the bigger you are th harder it is to get flat? The fella in the video was a pretty slim guy and he seemed pretty flat.

Hammocks are great. Really well done and detailed PDF. Excellent job.

Very well done...I enjoyed it!

I'm trying to rig up some quicker attachments for my hammocks; one is using titanium rings like a belt-buckle to cinch it up quickly. Great technique on your cover to keep it level,

Hammocks are great for the south east in the spring summer and fall. Keeps you up off the ground (often humid and lots of creepy crawlers and slitherers).

I use a cotton hammock (will upgrade to silk when this one wears out) and a 5'x7' tarp. Works great and I can even store my pack under me so it doesnt get rained on either.

mmmm love my hammock!

You could use prussiks or change the tape to rope, and use a wildcountry ropeman each end.

Yeah, that's an option, but I have the tape (tubular webbing) and the rings, so I'm going to try that out with my Warbonnet hammock. Part of my reason is to make it easier for the kids; they are not quite knot experts yet and I end up setting all the hammocks up myself. I'd like to get their hammocks setup for a quick around-the-tree snap link and then tightend up with cinch rings or some other quick method...of course weight and bulk are a concern.
