Any guys use a tarp / basha as a shelter? I wanted one with a loop in the centre to hold it up when used in the British Army style, between four trees.

I just ordered a Hilleberg Tarp 10

I went for the tougher, but heavier XP which is made of silicone coated polyester.

This was cheaper than the Sil-Nylon. Do you have any experience of these materials?

Your help would be appreciated.

i asked the same question over on jeff randall's forum, they were very positive on the uses of the siltarp (lightweight silicone impregnated nylon) as a shelter for their jungle adventures. they like the tarps with the loops rather than gromets.

I'm getting a 20'x20' tarp made for me at work eventaully. I'm on the welding crew, and if I go in saturday and do it myself I only pay for materials instead of 1/2 the cost being labour(just have a sewing person spend 20min to get the edges).

the 20x20 makes pretty much any shelter for 1 person you can think of(air cadets had me make a few different styles). leanto is easiest. Just put loops every foot or so.

I use a British Army basha from Brigade Quartermasters. It's DPM camouflage and has the loops for tying off. It's a great product, lightweight, tough and waterproof.

Go to www.actiongear.com and type in BASHA. It retails for $39.95 and comes with 100 ft. of paracord.

I have a campmor sil-nylon 8X10 tarp and have been using it wor a couple years now. Tarps are extremely light and effective as shelters when used porperly. Unless I am car camping, I use the tarp and a bug bivy.
