i notice alot of you guys use the sil-impregnated tarps. i was wondering where to find them. also i found a sil-impregnated pocho/shelter at campmor and was wondering if anyone has one and what they think. also how do these compare to the standard mil-issue ponchos, and where is a good source for these as well?? i've seen a few in catalogs but most are knockoffs and i question the quality.

thanks

I've got a sil-pancho from Equinox and it is waterproof, but is very light weight. I don't think it is near as durable as a mil-spec one. I bought it for the very lightweight and small stuff size of it. Good for day trips and overnights. If I were doing a long trip I think I would go mil-spec.

This is my personal favorite

I have a similar poncho to the above, made by Halti. I was going to buy a mil poncho, but I saw this on sale, for only 20€ (MSRP ~50€). Good for the price, very good as a poncho, adjustable size, and has good lashing points for use as an emergency shelter. The material could be a little more rip resistant I think, even though it hasn't had any tears yet. It's also not the lightest out there at about 800 g (with pouch), but it seems to be well thought out and definitely large enough.

The insulated liner on the Exped seems like a good idea, and it looks to be a very serious piece of kit indeed.

It is 3 times as heavy as the silnylon units but it is also more protective and comfortable to wear in my opinion.

The US Army issued a camoflage, goretex ponchos with side and neck zips as well as velcro flap covered grommets to 10 Mountain Division in the early 90s.I regret not getting one for myself.

It's been about 3 years since I shopped for one,I think they are made in Europe so maybe their distributor for the US crapped out on them.I think there must be a place that has them in stock somewhere. Most of the online vendors were drop shipping them from a distributor so they are all out simultaneously.

I would keep looking though,The Exped Bivy Poncho Extreme using 2 liners is invaluable for staying alive in 89% of this planet's weather conditions.Even in hot weather using it as a tarp shelter and sleeping in/on the liner bags.
