Yeah, Buddiiee, I gor a basha from BQ as well. Seems really heavy and I'll probably replace it with a sillli tarp. (But I'm a sucker for camo!)

I have only one problem with the poncho-shelter concept... what if it's raining and I need to leave the shelter?

I like that Basha tarp Buddiiee posted, or a regular hardware-store tarp (widely available in woodland camo ;) ). I used an 8'x10' tarp last fall to make a handy shelter taller than a poncho one, with enough material for an integral ground sheet. (to cover the 40 cubic yards of dry leaves I gathered for insulation!) Granted, the tarp is bulkier to pack in.

I always take along a good rain shell and the poncho. The poncho packs small and is lightweight, and I designate that as the primary shelter. It can serve as a wearable item if need be. I'm all for packing light, but I do allow for some redundancy with some gear. If I get in trouble and things get cold and wet, it's nice to have a shelter and something protective to wear. I have a 3-layer Goer-Tex anorak that packs down almost as small as a poncho.

Another alternative to a tarp shelter is 3 or 4 mil plastic sheeting. I bought a roll of 8' x 25' 4 mil plastic for about $8. With that roll, some duct tape, and some grommets, you can get three 8' x 8' decently durable tarps (I've only made one so far). Cheap enough to throw away if the tarp gets beat up. Decent for use as shelter of ground cloth.

I just have the regular hardware store ones. 1 in knock off woodland and one blue. I usually bring 2 as one's for the ground and one on top.

Check these out. http://www.hennessyhammock.com/index.htm it's more than a tarp shelter, but packs down smaller than a football and sets up in notime. I used it for the first time on a kayak trip around isle royal and it was the most comfortable camping I've ever done. bye bye tent hello hammock. I admit i was sceptical about the idea, as i don't favor sleeping crammed up in a ball, but i can actually lay on my stomach in this thing. It can be set up on the ground if there's no trees, but no more laying in puddles or on the hard ground. Some people still put a pad in them, but i didn't and didn't feel that i needed it. They make insulated liners for winter camping as well.
if you do hiking / canoeing out back trips you've got to check this out.

I carry a 10x12 sili nylon tarp. Stuffs down to nothing and is the bomb. I seal it to the ground low for cold weather and hook up a candle lantern to the roof and it warms up nicely.

I have one of the Hennessy's also. I have used it a couple of times and I really like it. It is my standard camping kit now instead of a tent unless I am going to be in an area without trees around. I love being able to lay on my side in it. I have also used it in cool weather, around 35 or so if I remember correctly with a thermarest inside under my sleeping bag. Slept like a baby.
