Tascosa pattern number?

Just curious about the meaning, if there is one, of the GEC Tascosa #83 pattern number? Since the Tascosa is a lockback, should it have been #82 (if it were not already taken) since the 72 and 42 are also lockbacks of a similar form? (Although I do realize that there are non-locking versions of both the 42 and 72.) The 83 makes me think of a continuation of the 23 and 73 non-locking series, although there have been locking versions of those patterns I believe it is fair to say most of them are traditional slipjoint style. So perhaps I have answered my own question, to a degree...

I think that sometimes the pattern number means something, but can it be 'random' at other times?

Regardless of numbers it is a great knife that I expect to become a favorite, but it would be interesting to know if there is a backstory to the #83, or any other GEC pattern numbers for that matter.

I also wonder if there is any chance of seeing a non-locking slipjoint version of the 83, carrying the 72/73 tradition?

Random I'd say.

The 99 is an LB and that's not ending in 2... The Hogan comes as both a LB and slipjoint so there could well be an 83 non LB in the future given its popularity.

I would love to see this- I heard somewhere that there were 83s without a lock but I haven't been able to find anything to prove that. I really like the look of the long pull clip blades on the 83 but would prefer it as a slipjoint

The 82 pattern number is the Dixie Stock Knife. There are no 83 Tascosas without a lock. The only thing at GEC that is carved in stone is, that Nothing is Carved in Stone.

Hah do you know if there is any talk or possibility of the #83 ever coming out without a lock back?

Owing to the popularity of the pattern, I would assume that at some point there will be a non locking version. So far I have not heard of any talk of this. GEC is a small company, limited manufacture, big demand. It might take quite awhile for any particular pattern to come around. Their recent history is replete with several very popular patterns that had one or two runs never to be seen again.

Hope thats not the case with this one. Like I said, I love the size and the look of the clip point version but I would really like this knife to be a slip joint
