Hi Barney,
Nice to hear from you, Barney the Glowrings are a real HOT item not only because it seems that everybody who sees them in the dark wants them but also because they "run" on H3 Tritium gas that has a half time of 12.5 years meaning it looses half it's radioactive properties every 12.5 years.
The glowrings consist of a clear Lexan keychain size approx. 1.6" by 3/8" square. On one end there's a splitring to attach your keys to or whatever you want to attach the glowring too.
The working part is a borosilicate glass tube being approx. 1" long by 1/16" diameter coated on the inside with Phospor and filled with 460 millicuries worth off H3 (Tritium gas). To get this much in the tube they filled it at 2.5 bars pressure.
The glasstube is then fitted in the center hollow of the keychain and "fixed" with a drop/squirt of silicon glue that remains elastic and acts like a schock-absorber.
The amount of silicon glue varies and sometimes it also turns a little "matte" I mean opaque, not clear. Sometimes people think that the glasstube has crushed and the "chemicals" leaked out but every case I've seen with my own scouts it has been that the silicon glue turned opaque.
The Glowrings come in 4 colors, Green being the brightest, then Yellow, Ice-Blue (light blue sky color) and last Blue which Traser describer as "purple" but I find it dark Blue.
Thhe Blue one is the least glowing one but women like the color very much
and it is visible the fastest when the surrounding light fades.
Barney, on the negative side is that your Atomic blah blah commity forbit importation of the Glowrings into the US because they are not considered emergency devices and as such one can only freely import "gadgets" containing up to 100 millicuries radioactivity.
If it were classified an emergency device it could without problems contain even 15 Curries (apprx. 24 times more then the Glowring contains) an example are the Fire EXIT signs making use of Glowring technology theny contain up to 15 Curries and are considered absolutely safe. This just shows you how frustrating rules can sometimes be.
I consider my glowring an "emergency device" as loosing ones car keys in high grass while being out with the scouts on a night hike could lead to problems if I can't find them and I need the car.
I had this happen and the Green glow of the Glowringmade finding my car keys quiet easy.
Barney, when we get glowrings for our own scouts (and family) we can add extra glowrings to our order that forumites asked for this way we make a little extra money and keep you guys safe
We normally sell them for $10 a piece including priority airmail to "the rest of the world".
If any off you guys&girls want some just let us know and we can add you to a future Glowring order.
Best "glowing" scouting wishes from Holland,
Bagheera
