Hi Bagheera,
As usual, you always find these cool items that no one should be without. Could you post some info. on size and price, as I'll probably want to order some from you. I bought some Firesteels from you that are just great. Thanks,

Hi Barney,

Nice to hear from you, Barney the Glowrings are a real HOT item not only because it seems that everybody who sees them in the dark wants them but also because they "run" on H3 Tritium gas that has a half time of 12.5 years meaning it looses half it's radioactive properties every 12.5 years.

The glowrings consist of a clear Lexan keychain size approx. 1.6" by 3/8" square. On one end there's a splitring to attach your keys to or whatever you want to attach the glowring too.
The working part is a borosilicate glass tube being approx. 1" long by 1/16" diameter coated on the inside with Phospor and filled with 460 millicuries worth off H3 (Tritium gas). To get this much in the tube they filled it at 2.5 bars pressure.
The glasstube is then fitted in the center hollow of the keychain and "fixed" with a drop/squirt of silicon glue that remains elastic and acts like a schock-absorber.

The amount of silicon glue varies and sometimes it also turns a little "matte" I mean opaque, not clear. Sometimes people think that the glasstube has crushed and the "chemicals" leaked out but every case I've seen with my own scouts it has been that the silicon glue turned opaque.

The Glowrings come in 4 colors, Green being the brightest, then Yellow, Ice-Blue (light blue sky color) and last Blue which Traser describer as "purple" but I find it dark Blue.
Thhe Blue one is the least glowing one but women like the color very much

and it is visible the fastest when the surrounding light fades.

Barney, on the negative side is that your Atomic blah blah commity forbit importation of the Glowrings into the US because they are not considered emergency devices and as such one can only freely import "gadgets" containing up to 100 millicuries radioactivity.
If it were classified an emergency device it could without problems contain even 15 Curries (apprx. 24 times more then the Glowring contains) an example are the Fire EXIT signs making use of Glowring technology theny contain up to 15 Curries and are considered absolutely safe. This just shows you how frustrating rules can sometimes be.

I consider my glowring an "emergency device" as loosing ones car keys in high grass while being out with the scouts on a night hike could lead to problems if I can't find them and I need the car.

I had this happen and the Green glow of the Glowringmade finding my car keys quiet easy.

Barney, when we get glowrings for our own scouts (and family) we can add extra glowrings to our order that forumites asked for this way we make a little extra money and keep you guys safe
wink.gif

We normally sell them for $10 a piece including priority airmail to "the rest of the world".

If any off you guys&girls want some just let us know and we can add you to a future Glowring order.

Best "glowing" scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Bagheera;
Put me on your list for a couple of those glowrings.

I believe that tritium gas is primarily an Alpha emitter and as such the radioactivity will not penatrate a sheet of paper. Have you ever put one of them up to a radiac meter to see if you get any responce?. FYI... in the U.S. the minimum acceptable radioactive contamination allowable is 450 uuc/ 100cm2 (primarily Co-60) once the tritium gas is released it would probably not be picked up by APD (air particle detector).
Blah, Blah, Blah...

I still want a couple is you can get them to me.

Hi Ron,

Correct an Alpha emitter not even capable of penetrating a piece of household plastic foil.

Ron, getting them send over to the US is no problem just drop me an e-mail with yoyur address and colors/number you prefer.

Friday, we'll place an order with Traser and we'll add yours and any Forumite who asked for them to it.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera (Piet, pronounced as Pete!)

Tritium is a beta emitter and does not emit alpha or gamma, and since beta radiation cannot penetrate the glass capsule the tritium is in, such things as Glow Rings and tritium gunsights do not emit any radiation at all (except light).

The rest of this post merely explains that and if you're not interested in nuclear physics you can skip it.

When radioactivity was first discovered nobody knew what the three kinds of radiation emitted by radium were, so they named them alpha, beta, and gamma radiation to keep them straight. Those names are still used even though we know what they are now....

An alpha ray is a helium4 nucleus -- two protons and two neutrons; a beta ray is an electron, and gamma is electromagnetic radiation of higher frequency and shorter wavelength than x-rays.

Tritium is an isotope of hydrogen, hydrogen3, with one proton and two neutrons. It beta decays to helium3 -- one of the neutrons emits an electron and a neutrino, leaving a proton, and we're left with two protons and one neutron. The neutrino goes off harmlessly into space. The electron strikes a material lining the capsule which responds by emitting light.

Although it's moving at high velocity a beta ray is only an electron, a particle of little mass which because of its charge interacts strongly with the electron shell of any atom in its path. A beta ray cannot penetrate a sheet of paper, or the outermost layer of your skin, or the plastic capsule tritium is enclosed in to make a Glow Ring. Thus, although there is radioactive material inside a Glow Ring, it does not emit any radiation as long as the capsule is intact. Even if the capsule breaks it won't do you any harm.

By the way, charge is conserved. You can think of a neutron as a proton and an electron stuck together by magnetic attraction. It takes energy to make them stick together, and when they are divorced by beta decay that energy is released in a neutrino and in the kinetic energy of the electron (its velocity). We're left with a helium3 atom which still has only one electron (since it was only recently a hydrogen atom) so it has a net charge of +1 -- but we're also have an electron speeding off, which has a charge of -1, so electical charge is conserved, and since the electron cannot leave the capsule, the net charge of the capsule remains neutral. The free electrons eventually join up with the helium3 ions to form neutral atoms.

I hope I haven't bored you too much. The point is Glow Rings are perfectly harmless and you can even carry them around in your underwear if you want with no fear of having children with three heads.

Cougar,

I stand corrected, I must be loosing my Biology training, it's an Beta emitter.

Gorm, No email address so you're hard to reach, just drop me an email as always we ordered a few extra Glowrings so we might just get you some.

Best Scouting wishes from Beta... I mean Holland,

Bagheera

LS Cougar, you might have just discovered a completely new Glowring market with your underwear remark.... body piercings...Glowrings....

Bagheera, please put me down for a glow ring (possibly a couple) the next time you & the scouts place an order--whenever that may be; no rush. If you'll email me (follow the email link above) to let me know when you're going to place the order, I'll send payment in advance. Thanks.

woah!
so these things last that long?
put me down for a green one
biggrin.gif

if its not too late youve got mail.

Couger;
Thanks also for the correction. For some reason I must have been thinking of radium or some other isotope. However, "beta ray" is a little deceiving since beta is particulate and not a ray like gamma which is electromagnetic energy.
I guess I should have remembered more about my 7.5yrs. as a radiological control technician. (mostly concerned with Co60 and fission products).
Ciao

Just got my Glowrings (one of each color) Piet is right, women do like the dark blue ones. As soon as my wife saw the blue, she claimed it for herself (darn, that was my favorite color too!)

Piet is great to deal with. You all must order from him and support the Dutch scouts.

Many, many thanks Piet!

S.

I got mine from Piet also. I like them.

There great for what there're intended for. If you drop your keys, they are easy to spot.

They are not intended to be locator beacons. If you throw you keys into a field, they will be hard to find, with or without the glowrings.

But for finding keys that you dropped around your vehicle or along a trail you walked, they work good.

Hi guys & girls,

Thanks for the kind words about my (our) way of hadling our scouting groups Glowring fundraiser.
The pleasure also has been on my (our) side as our trust has only been misused :( once in the last months.

YThe month July will be a low activity month for our Scouting group because this Saturday will be the end of our groups scout summer camps and then we'll be "closed" for the rest of July.

However beginning of August we will be strting the Glowring fundraiser again so please feel free to send me your requests as of now and I'll add them to our list.

I still don't know how/if we'll become "supreme member" to be able to post in the for sale forums as we normally don't post there very often and I'm working on an own homepage with Scouting info and Glowring/Firesteel info.

Again thanks for the pleasant honest way you all kept your part of the "deal" and for the support of our scouting group.

I wish you all a pleasant 225th 4th off July :D ,

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Bagheera, I've seen your glowrings and would like to order 3 green ones.

Mitch (used to go by feverdoc here in Memphis) shouldn't be the
only one in our group to have neat stuff.

Will e-mail my address, etc.
