Tasman Salt versus Delica 4 for Self Defense

Just got a Delica 4 PE and noticed that the grip security is much better than the Delica 3. There is a more pronounced groove/guard for the index finger that prevents forward slippage during a thrust, and the handle is a bit longer as well. Probably makes for a great, light SD knife.

I think it may even be better than the Tasman Salt and other hawkbills (like the Harpy) of comparable length...

Any thoughts from the experts?

I'm no "expert", but there is a whole school of thought built around the hawkbill and Civilian designs which are better suited for SD.

Just look at the designs. You can see how the curved blade will just rip once the point makes contact.

With proper trainng, either should do well. The delica has a long history of being an "unofficial" mbc knife.

Thanks, guys.

I love them both for SD, but I always wonder of the Tasman Salt would catch in someone's jacket on a slash. I did some tests that simulate slashing a leather jacket, and while the tip sinks in really easily, it doesn't pass through very cleanly and has a definite tendency to snag. The wound channel in this case would have been both short and shallow. In the case of a Matriarch or a Civvie, the belly of the blade would aid in the slide and create a much longer wound.

Running the same test with the new Delica PE, I find that the knife slides over the leather, slicing through at the end of the cut, but not very deep a all (SE is probably better here). But the upside is that I can stab and create a really nasty wound.

Is the lesson here that a Civilian / Matriarch is different from a hawkbill as it relates to self defense?

Perhaps the lesson is that a knife is not a good choice for a self-defense tool.

 If you train regularly it hardly matters what blade you use, If you don't train regularly it hardly matters what blade you use.
