What are the bolsters of the tactical LCC with green micarta scales made of? Are they titanium, like on the CF scaled LCC's, or aluminum? I have seen both first hand, and the bolsters on the micarta scaled version look darker. Is this just a different finish on the titanium, or the blackened aluminum that I have heard is used on some LCC's??

Thanks in advance.

I am wondering the same thing. Mine is the "special edition" #4494, born 04/2001. My dealer is under the impression that the bolsters are Ti. The "magnet" test is useless, since Al is also non-magnetic.

The answer may lie over at KFC in the "Microholics" forum.

The first 100 or so were still made with Ti bolsters with Boron Carbide coating. You can notice the black seems cloudy, for the lack of a better word. The AL bolsters are a darker and more true black all over. Compare the Black Ti bolster to any Gen 4 LCC.

I'm not sure if this will help or confuse you more. The first Ti bolster Tacticals I received had green spacers. They are in the 4200's serial #'s range. Now they are coming with black spacers.

Hope that helped.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages of the titanium over the aluminum?

Also would the anodized aluminum look basically like the anodized aluminum scales of many knives, a very true black, with a slight sheen?

Thanks again.

Erik

Ti is, of course, much more expensive than Al. As a pratical matter, I don't think it makes much difference from a functional point of view.

Ti is also much more difficult to machine and work with. It would probably have more "prestige" value.

I think anodized Al and Ti are going to look pretty much the same, which is probably why this thread got started to begin with.

Probably the ultimate solution would be to contact MT directly. I may do that.
