This might belong in whine and cheese, I wasn't really sure. I'm looking to get a tattoo of a knife. Unfortunately all the knives I've seen of the artists look really cheesy and stupid. I'm thinking of a dagger style knife to go along down my back. Any idears?

Don't do it, unless you want it more than anything else. What seems cool when you're 17 might be a huge mistake when you're 20. Think about what you want to do with your life, and decide if a tattoo is worth jeopardizing it. I'm glad I decided against mine, it spared me a waiver when I decided what I wanted to do.

and would have more if money were no object. It's been 15 years since I got my first and I'm happy I have them. If I were to choose a blade design for myself it would be crossed khukuris but that's because the khuks and guys in the Cantina have made a lasting impression on me. I'd say pick something that has meaning for you and have it done by a good artist. Check out the artist's portfolio and make sure they can do what you want (ie: not cheesy). Good luck.

Get whatever tattoo that you want. I am very heavily inked along with several very succesfull friends of mine. I have been getting tattooed for 13 years now, and the only rules that I have followed are nothing on my hands or neck. I like to be able to wear a suit and not show any ink if neccessary. So settle on a design that you like, find an artist that has a good reputation and portfolio and enjoy!

i've got a tat on each arm, and they're absolutely great. i love 'em. my wife loves 'em. heck, my parents even love them. i've only had 'em for about 3-4 years, but i don't regret it. i'll get more, when i can stop spending on knives. i'm gonna get a sleeve on my left arm next.

anyway, my point is, go for it! will this be your first? if so, my advice: don't cheap out. it's RARE (read: impossible) to get an excellent tattoo for not a lot of money, so be prepared to pay properly, and shop around no matter what!!

as for a design, maybe you could commission (or beg) a knife maker on here to come up with a swell design for you, perhaps in their free time? then, if you find a good artist, they may be able to add some embellishments or improvements.

I had an uncle who was inked. He never had any problems in life. I would say that as long as you're careful with placement there's no reason why you can't get a good one. That is, nothing you can't cover when necessary. And prepare to get that tattoo re-inked after a while if necessary. I'd probably go for a Strider or Randal Model 1, but personally, if I were going to get a tattoo, it'd be either the guinness harp or the Boston Red Sox logo. But that's me.

Sincerely,
Anthony C. Paulin.

I actually got a tattoo last March. It's on my ankle and is of a cross. Yet it bares a striking resemblence to a sword. Not really, but people who no of my affinity for bladed objects immideately link it with such things. It was not my intention. I alwasy thought that knives belonged on you pants, not on your skin.
But to go completely against what I just said, go for something symmetrical. Maybe a WWII comando dager or something. My other advise is to get something with it like flames, or a heart, or name, or a date, or something.

I've actually been thinking about getting the Benchmade Butterfly tattooed on my chest or something. But that may be stupid if I get a job as a Spyderco rep or something like that. So, I'm going to sit on that one for now.

Mine is small & at the top/outside of my L thigh- really out of sight.
It's an eye (vision & wisdom) over crossed Bowies (strength- the bowies are copies of a bowie pin by knifemaker George Dailey) over a heart (love & compassion). The eye & heart balance the bowies. I've had it for a few years & only got it after years of careful consideration. It means something to me alone & not something I generally "roll my sleeves up" to show. "Keep your ink where a judge/potential employer can't see it" (advice from an inked friend).

KC- the reason I mentioned a dagger in my first post was because they're symmetrical and I thought that would probably look the best. Then I searched the web and found some tattoos of other styles of knife that looked really good, so I'm still hung on this one. I won't be getting it for a while so I've got time to decide.

Allyourblood- Thanks for the suggestion, if any knife makers want to volunteer some past designs or draw new ones I would greatly appreciate it.

MW740, Rugger, and SpyderJon- Thanks for the advice! (a fellow Guiness drinker I see)
