Taurus PT92?

I'm shopping for a new 9mm and I've always loved the look of the famous Beretta 92. The cheapest used one I can seem to locate is nearly $500. I've been reading some good things about the Taurus PT92 which is very similar to it's Beretta counterpart, and much cheaper. Just curious if anyone has any opinions on the Taurus or if anyone owns one or has fired one.

Thanks

I've owned a Taurus PT92. They're decent guns, though not in the same league in terms of quality; they look and feel cheaper, and the trigger pull suffers accordingly. The magazines are not interchangeable with Beretta 92 pistol magazines, either, so keep that in mind.

You're not going to find any bargains right now because the gun industry went nuts with Obama's election. Depending on the price for which you're able to find the Taurus, you might or might not be able to get it cheaply enough that it makes sense to get that rather than just spend the extra dough for the 92, but all things being equal, I would try to hold out for the Beretta.

The nice thing about the PT92 is that it can be had with an accessory rail.

Be aware that a lot of newer-production Berettas use a variety of plastic parts they did not previously use. A friend of mine replaced all of these with metal hardware when he discovered it.

I believe the PT-92 also has a different safety/decocker system. Some people prefer it because it's frame mounted rather than slide mounted like the Beretta 92.

I have a Beretta 92FS that I bought back in 92 and I have owned a Taurus 92. From what I was told the Taurus is built on the old Beretta frame. On the Taurus you have a safety and can carry it cocked and locked but my Beretta has a decocker on it meaning you can let the hammer down when chamberd, it rolls the firing pin up out of the way and lets the hammer down. I think they went to that for the military. So all of the Taurus is, is the Older style Beretta. The Taurus is a good gun IMO. I have owned both. They both shoot good and was durable. I never had a jam or anything with the Taurus. I would be happy with either one being that you can have the 15round mags.

Introduction of polymers
After 1992 Beretta started producing model 92s with some polymer parts, to reduce wear and save production costs. Polymer parts found on newer pistols include guide rods, triggers, safety levers, hammer spring caps, lanyard loops, and magazine bottom plates and followers.

Interesting, but if Glock can do it, no reason Beretta can't do the same.

So can the Beretta.

I dislike Beretta 92s, and I dislike the Taurus even more. Have plenty of broken parts from both compared to Sig, Cz, 1911s.

I have never been fond of the Beretta 92s or the clones, they are huge compared to what is available today for CCW. If you like them tho I would go ahead and spend the extra bucks and buy the Beretta, in the long run I think you will be happier.

i have both a berretta and a taurus 92 and the taurus is just "rougher" in finish and especially the trigger, my taurus 92 has not a bad but a horrible trigger, it is accurate enough though and functions well too, but the difference between the triggers on the 2 has to be felt to be believed, i suppose if ya could get a deal on one and then do a trigger job?

if it was me i would try a glock/SIG or kahr, i have seen used glock 17's and 19's for ~ $300 or $350 i dont think a taurus 92 would be much cheaper and the glock is a LOT better pistol imho than the taurus OR the berretta.

i actually edc'd a berretta 92 for a while, IWB some, shoulder holster some, and its just too big for that kinda stuff imho, there are better pistols around for edc.

the only reason i have a taurus 92 is a bud was gonna lose it in pawn and i got the thing for $150, it is worth that all day lol, $400 or $500 well thats another story.

Thanks for all of the replies! Those of you that have or have had a PT92, was your's an older or newer manufactured model? The reason I ask is that I know the older ones were rock solid, but I'm not so sure about the newer ones. Again, thanks for all of the input, it's much appreciated!

Thanks

Mine was a newer one. There was nothing wrong with it. The safety did give me pause, though -- you can carry cocked and locked, yes, but if you get a little too jumpy flicking the safety off, you'll decock it and that first pull will be double action.

A good friend of mine had a 2 PT92's. Like everyone else has said they are good guns & w/taurus lifetime warranty it's hard to beat....BUT the trigger is awful ! As for getting a good 9mm ... GLOCK ! you can't go wrong with the G17 or G19 models just depends on your mode of carry CCW go with the G19 if you don't care about CCW then G17  As for me I love my G19

My PT99 (adjust. sight) was 100% reliable. I thought the fit and finish were respectable (mine was nickel). I can't remember the trigger pull, but I doubt it was anything great. The only problem with the gun was that towards the end of my ownership of it, the magazine release button starting catching on the frame. Annoying!

May I throw in my two cents? If you want a rock solid, all metal 9mm go for the CZ P-01. It's a superb little piece. Fits your hand like a glove, is smallish (still holds 14 rds), totally reliable, accurate, and has a nice decocker on it.

It's not too expensive, either. You can probably get one for about $500.

mine is pretty old, its got the mag release on the butt FWIW, IIRC it was made in the mid to late '80s.

imho the later ones i have handled had a teeny bit better trigger, not much better though.

I bought one about twelve years ago. The trigger absolutely SUCKED. I bought a trigger pack from Brownell's and had my local smith put in in. The total cost of the parts & work were about $40. and the trigger STILL sucked. I sold it after a short time, It was way too big for my liking and a gun with that bad of a trigger has no place in my arsenal.

I have an older one. It's accurate and well-made. The safety is an improvement over the Berettas (IMHO), but I think the trigger pull on either gun is nasty. The problem is there is a long double action pull, followed by a single action pull that doesn't trip the sear until the trigger is almost all the way back to the rear of the trigger guard.

The gun feels nice and hand-filling for a guy with big hands, but when you're shooting the thing single-action, it feels like you have to put your trigger finger all the way back to your palm to get the damn thing to fire.

I could never get used to it. Mine's pretty much a safe queen.

I much prefer the ergos of my CZ-75.

I learned to shoot pistol decently on a PT-92. I prefer them to the Beretta, but prefer almost any other auto to them both.

Thanks again for all of the replies. I've gained a lot of insight from everyone. I've decided to explore the recommended used Glocks and Sigs if I can't find a used PT92, for the price of a new one I could definitely get one of the more recommended pistols.

The gun market sure is crazy right, it's hard to find much of anything anywhere.

Again, thanks again everyone, lots of great information in this thread.

I have the Taurus PT92C. Nice compact version. Just put a after market rail on it for my tac light. Nice shooting gun. You can easily fix the trigger in a few hours.

really even the compact 92's arent very small, they are single stack arent they its been a while since i handled one.
