I'm doing it online, and here's exactly what it says (so confusing).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enter Tuition and Fees for 2006

This includes expenses paid for your tuition, fees, books, and related supplies.

If the school provided a Form 1098: Tuition Statement, use the amounts in Box 1 (payment) or Box 2 (billed amounts) only if they reflect these expenses.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, the only box to fill in says "Tuition and fees"

So, are they talking about just my cost of tuition and fees, or do they mean that the box titled "Tuition and Fees" "includes expenses paid for your tuition, fees, books, and related supplies."

If that's what they mean, then shouldn't there be a box that says "books and related supplies" or do they mean "book, and related supplies" are included in the "Tuition and Fees" expenses?

Basically, judging by what the page says, do I put in just my tuition costs, or my tuition + books and stuff. ???????????????????????????

I wouldn't be so anal about this, but it is the difference of a few hundred dollars obviously.

Can anyone figure this out????? I'm so confused and frustrated and running out of time!

TIA

I think you need to fill in what you paid for tuition, fees, ect.

I'm doing the same thing for my daughters tuition, and I also do our taxes online.

I'll be working on that part over the weekend, so if I find out something different, I'll post here.

When I did mine last year (and I need to check again this year), "books and related supplies" were only those materials which MUST be purchased in order to take the course. In effect, if there was a textbook that the professer said, "go get this book," that is not covered. If there was an extra fee automatically on my University Bill designated as "Econ 322 Materials Fee" that was added because I registered for the class, that gets counted.

Sorry for the long explanation. Hope this helps.

My daughters forms showed the breakdown of the tuition and required fees, so we were able to claim the full amount listed, which does NOT include room and board. Room and board, as well as extra books are not deductible, only the tuition, and mandated fees.
