Another new business is headed to the Tri-Cities.

Taylor Cutlery...a long-time Kingsport business acquired the rights and inventory of Schrade knives earlier this week.

It's a business that got it's start some 20 years ago...their first catalogue offered just 3 collectable knives. Now Taylor Cutlery is a much bigger company.

This week with the help of no fewer than 5 local banks, they outbid several of the country's largest knife manufacturers to acquire the rights to Schrade Knives -- the largest U-S pocketknife maker.

Owner Stewart Taylor says, "this is really just a dream of a lifetime and I just owe it all to my past employees and employees. You know, without them we wouldn't have the success we have today."

Taylor's facilities are already undergoing an expansion... adding 100 square feet, and planning to purchase an additional 15 acres. 20 to 30 new jobs will be on their way over the next 6 months.

"With all the plants shutting around down here, people losing their jobs, this is going to be a plus," according to warehouse manager Rob Henderson.

For Taylor and his employees this is a step toward making the Tri-Cities known around the world as a hub for quality knife manufacturing.

Schrade pocket knives are known among collectors for their "Old Timer" and "Uncle Henry" brand knives.

To say me feelings on the matter are mixed would be an understatement. Or maybe I'm just plain angry. I can't tell right now.
I need to think about this.

I am not sure what they bought since the factory equipment etc. was sold last month. THey might have only got the name and the remaining knives. Doesn't Taylor produce in Asia?

Seems to be a lot of mixed feelings about this, I guess until all the cards are on the table I'm not sure how to feel.

uhhhhh..taylor? :( wow! I hope this does not mean that what we knew as schrade "american" cutlery is now gone. I know schrade had some things made over seas before they went under, but I hope this is not the end of it.

Who knows?

I've never heard of Taylor knives. Anyone have a link to more info on their product quality? I guess I'd categorize Shrade as "cheap factory knives," best known for it's Old Timer lineup with plastic handles, but decent blades. Is Taylor any different?

Hard to believe!

Taylor has had a reputation of producing a few knockoffs here and there and I hope they don't ruin the Schrade name with more knockoffs and Frost Cutlery-style crap.

:( I'm gonna go buy another old timer before the crap starts coming out under a new owner...

I have a few Taylor knives, 3 are Coleman brand with nice stag handles and AUS-6 steel and are made in Seki, Japan, and I also have a stag handle Smith & Wesson made in China.

You are right, Schrade sold all of the equipment. My best guess is they will make the brand overseas. I would think the American Schrade is a thing of the past.

Just picked up a few of the original Schrades (American, not Taylor) at the local WalMart...
OldTimer 80T $19.96 (internet $35)
Uncle Henry 885UH $24.96 (internet $42)
Imperial AP5 $8.88 (made in Ireland)

If you start seeing Schrades marked made in China, forget it.
