Saw the subject line advertised. What is meant by "taylor made"? Is it worth it (US$ 20.95)?

Thank you.

"Taylor Made" - This makes (most of) us want to hurl!!!!

Taylor is the guy that bought the rights to the Schrade Old Timer and Uncle Henry brands when Schrade closed in July 2004. He is manufacturing knives from our beloved "hand-made in America" brands in China and selling them under the Schrade Old Timer and Uncle Henry names (which he legally owns the right to do).

I'm sure that LT will give you a much more opinionated explanation, but simply search this forum for "Taylor" and you'll get an idea.

But, then again, maybe "Made in America" and "jobs going overseas" doesn't bother you as much as it does (most of) us.

Thank, Ted. This explains the inexpensive price...you get what you pay for.

It was suggested in the Blade Discussion Forum that I may want to get an 80T for whittling, so I have been looking for one. Money *is* a point of consideration in this, and with Schrade closing their doors, that pushes the prices up on "authentic" Schrades. I will continue to look, but I may have to pay more than I am comfortable with.

21 bucks was not way off on the price of an 8OT back in the day. I'm sure you could find one on the 'bay for that.

Has anybody read Isaac Bashevis Singer's book: "When Schlemiel Went to Warsaw and Other Stories" ?, If I remember correctly there is one story where the people in the town complain about there not being enough cream, so the authorities decide that now water will be called "cream", and there is plenty of it....

So Taylor bought the rights to the name "Schrade" and is naming some knives "Schrade", you can buy a new "Schrade" if you want to, think of it as putting some of that new "cream" in you coffee....

Actually I don't know if the new Schrade knives are good or bad, I don't know who makes them, some are made in China and I believe some in the USA, there may be more than one maker, they just are not what I personally have come to know as "Schrade".

I am not against buying things from China or anywhere else (specially Mexico of course). Somebody please convince me that the name "Schrade" was bought in an honest, ethical manner (not just legally), and I will be willing to buy new Schrades with no remorse at all.

I just bought an unused USA-made Schrade 8OT on eBay for $15. I bet you can find a used one for less than that.

Taylor is an import company, and despite the American flag on the boxes, their "OldTimer" knives are made in China. Some earlier comments indicated that the quality is low.

Rigid has a line of OldTimer knock-offs, but I haven't heard anything about their quality and don't know where they're made.

Best Wishes,
Bob

Lawrence, you can get geniune (aka non-Taylor) 8OT's on ebay for very reasonable prices (even under $20) if you are patient, and especially if you get a used one. I like NIB for collecting, but if I'm looking for an EDC or a user, I prefer used. It's sort of like adopting an orphan that someone else has gotten tired of, but that still has plenty of life left in it. For some reason, I have a hard time putting a NIB edge against a stone, but the used ones - I love to restore and breathe life back into them. And, ohhhh that 1095 steel, it does take a wonderful edge on these Hard Black Arkansas stones.
