Best thing you can do for kid (especially a boy) is give them a small pocket knife. They soon learn all the important lessons and have a use-all tool to pry, screw, cut, carve.

If you are referring to an SAK with multiple tools I couldn't agree more. My young son uses my Spyderco while I am supervising him and I teach him that the blade is for cutting only. I want him to learn to use the tool safely and for its intended purpose.
