Hello all,

I'll be moving to DC this summer, and was curious if there are any hands-on learning opportunities in the area? Bladesmithing is something I've wanted to learn for quite some time now.

Thank you,
-Mike

Get with Decker. The CMBG has a school and classes just a short way from DC. Decker drives to DC from his home every day, and the school is halfway between the two. There are also several great opportunities in and around the Baltimore area. Decker can fill you in on those, too.

I can't say exactly when it will be ready, but Bill Morans old shop which is now a museum is being brought up to today's codes and the upstairs portion is going to be a classroom. I know the plan is to eventually to be doing seminars and forging classes at the museum. I can check with some of the board members of the foundation and see what the time frame is. It's about an hour from DC, about 30 minutes from me.

Thank you for the help everyone. Sounds like I have a few options in my backyard.

I drove past Bills old shop on Alt 40 the Saturday before Labor Day, and saw a realty sign out front. Where is this museum going to be?

Jay Hendrickson is in the Frederick area, you could email him. There are some very generous makers in the MD area that you could meet up with. Also, several knife clubs. The Chesapeake knife show in December is a good time to network with local makers. The Mason Dixon knife show, which moves to Hagerstown next year, is a small show that might get you started. Deker is good people to get in touch with. Edgeworks in Frederick and Knife Center near DC might get you in touch with a few makers (both knife shops).

The realty sign may have been for an adjacent property, I know the old shop is not for sale! The foundation just spent a bunch of money to bring the shop up to code and make a classroom upstairs. The museum will be downtown Middletown.
