I have a couple SOG Team Leader Knives that I like to carry backpacking and on day hikes. The nylon sheath on one of them has seen better days so I have been considering a sheath upgrade. I like leather sheaths and I was curious if anybody has tried the Leather Sheath that SOG sells?

For $35 it's downright cheap and appropriate for a modestly priced knife. Note the original Nylon sheath sells for $15..

I had also thought about trying my hand at leather craft but winter is over and I am getting the itch to start hiking again and time to do something. A custom sheath on this knife is just not really worth the time or money. So, is the factory leather worth considering or is there a good Kydex option?

Hello, Quarterbore:

No experience with that particular leather sheath, but on other leather sheaths I just rub them down with Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP leather preservative and hit the trail.

I say get what you like, pack the knife and hit the trail -- spring/summer is over before you know it and the snow will be on the ground again.

Enjoy!

Best regards,

What kind of team leader is it? The one with Aus8 or that other steel one made in America? I kind of regret not buying that USA made when it was available. I have an Aus8 version, and it has been holding up well.

I want to know also about a sheath upgrade. I have the ugly nylon one with no button strap - which I hate.
