Hey guys, what ever happened to the Team Leader folder that was to be put into production? Looking at pics of the prototype I think it would make a very nice EDC folder, but is it ever going to make it into production or is it just a "concept" model destined to never be produced?

I don't have any "specific" background info on the TeamLeader in this respect.

But, SOG will frequently "float" new knife ideas to the public as "concept" products in addition to knives that will positively be added to its product line. They may do this with one or two knives annually.

Here are several possibilities:

  1. Most often (in my estimation), they show a "concept" knife like this to gauge public interest in the knife.
  2. They may have production complications which stall/end release of the knife.
  3. They might unexpectedly be required to put more time into one of their new, front line releases for the year and need to put this type of knife on the back burner until another year (or never).
  4. It might not "mesh" with the direction they want to take their product line.
  5. It might wind up to be one of those knives that look better on "paper."
  6. Or, I can imagine the possibility of patent/legal/business reasons.
I'm sure there are other reasons, but this will give you an idea of what might have happened to this knife (or other similar concept knives).

I was never a fan of re-using the "TeamLeader" name, but do like the appearance/concept of this knife and think it might have made a good addition to the SOG line.

Who knows.......we might still see it someday.

Don't think I've ever seen that prototype before. It sure is cool. I love the blade shape and how it's full flat ground. That handle is also lovely. Dang, it's just one sweet looking folder. If SOG makes it avaliable to the public, I'll buy it!!!

That is one of the nicest looking folders I have ever seen. I really hope they make it, I would buy one in an instant. Just please use a nice steel!

...what Hammer27 said.

It's an incredibly elegant knife, even in prototype form. Whoever designed it has a real appreciation of line and form. Love that sculpting on the top and bottom of the handle, it's a refined echo of what John EK used to put on his knives. That basic design could be "moved" in whatever direction SOG wants. Add Digi-grip on black Zytel, a blackened blade, and SOG has a tactical knife. Put a mirror stainless bolster and some wood/ stag/ bone/ pearl scales and SOG has a really high-end folder on par with the new Tomcat and Arcitech.

Am I the only one who thinks it would make a gorgous fixed blade? Like wildmanh said, that high, flat grind is fantastic. Scale it up (longer blade, slightly larger handle) and SOG would have an incredible fixed blade. I'm willing to bet that handle would just fly transitioning between forward and reverse grips, too.
