<Rant mode on> Ok, I'm usually pretty mild mannered, but this phucking server schit is getting on my God blessed nerves! I have gotten so many "Server too busy" errors today, and yesterday, heck just lately, that I'm ready to tear my hair out. It's phucking ridiculous, there's only 56 users online right now, and I can't even make a post without getting one of those messages. The one that pissed me off the most, was when I had typed a rather long reply to something, then when I hit reply, I got the message, and lost everything I had typed:mad:  :grumpy: That pissed me off bad. I usually copy everything I typed before hitting reply, just in case something like that happens, but failed to do it that time. Usually, if it takes several seconds to submit the reply, I will quickly highlight and save the post in case I get an error. Well, this time, right as I hit the button, I got the message, and lost all of my type. Then, when I usually get that message, I just hit Refresh a few times, and I get back in, but today and yesterday, it has taken sometimes several minutes to get back on. I can't wait until the new server gets up. <rant mode off>

Pissed,

Mike

Happens to me alot also. . .generally between 6:30 and 8:00 PM EST.

Where I once lived. . .the only service available, in a 40 mile radius, was A.O.Hell. How painful ! ;)

Gosh. . .kinda reminds me of the early days of A.O.Hell.

Don't feel too bad...It also happens to us "moderators", and it pisses me off, too..

I don't know what kind of machine this server software is running on, but it would seem that if it's getting worse with only 56 users on, and it used to host 100 (hypothetical numbers), then it might be a situation that can be improved cheaply. From what I know BFC is hosted on it's own server, not hosted off site. Could there be a program running that has a memory leak and is sucking up resources? Perhaps a memory module has gone bad? What about adding more memory, will the motherboard support more? It's cheap enough these days. Could it be a thermal issue (has it been opened and physically cleaned and inspected recently?)? Sometimes heatsinks move if the box gets moved.

I'm sure you guys have done all this, I'm just wondering. What about benchmarking the connection to make sure there's not an ISP issue?
I have no idea what OS this site is hosted on, nor how much bandwidth is allocated, but these are things the geek in me would look at on a Windows or Mac box.

Is it only Spark that has access to the hardware?

Sorry for so many questions. I just hate not being able to reliably hang out and post at the site I generally spend the most time on.

If this place is hosted on some monster multi processor unix box with a big RAID array and a T1 line, then I'm way out of my league and I'm sorry for asking. But if it's run on a Windows 2000 or XP server on more pedestrian hardware than a cheap fix might make for short term improvement until a new Ultra server can be obtained for BFC.

I'm just one knife/computer geek wondering.

Edited because I can't type worth a , well, you know...

I think it's about time to move this thread to Service & Support (although the title is going to look conspicuous in that forum)....

Cougar, my title was a bit more Whine and Cheesish appropriate, so if you want to make it more PC for the Service and Support section by changing the title, go ahead. I don't want to get into any trouble or anything.

Mike

JMX;

If I recall correctly, the BFC server is a Dell, running Linux, and hooked to it's own T-1 line. It is approximately 18 months old, and at capacity. As far as RAID array, and multi processors, I'm not sure; hopefully Spark will shed some light on that.

Spark is the only one who has access, either physically, or remotely, to the server, which is located in Jacksonville, Florida, so he's the one who deals with it, not the moderator staff.

the server's only 18 months old and maxed, but if the paid memberships kept up with the membership incerase, we might not even have server issues....

We're working on the issues guys. Trust me.

We've got 2 new servers that will be in place in the next 30 days or so. They are being built right now. As soon as they are in place, we should see everything running much more smoothly. In the meantime, we've made some more alterations to the server kernel and some professionals are looking at getting things working better. Until then, we're in a holding pattern.

Kevin

I'll comment on that in a little while when I have more info.

Kevin

Hopefully what is being done will have the ability to be upgraded in the future to be able to deal with the increased load it is going to see. It would be a real shame to go through this and then have the same problems in another 18 months.

The idea is that were going to move from a single server environment to a clustered model with a big MySQL server and satellite web servers connecting to it. That should leave room for scalability - more than we have right now.

Hey guys,

Sorry for not posting about this earlier, but I've been just swamped both at work, and at home, so I haven't had a lot of time to hang out here recently. I'm torn between so many different projects right now, it's a bit ridiculous actually.

The new servers are currently under construction, and I'll provide you all with a nice list of what the juicy hardware specs will be, once I get further along in the project. Suffice it to say, these boxes will be more than enough to handle all you can throw at them, and will be much more scalable than what's in place now.

Better yet, I plan on fully documenting the construction with pictures and such, so if you're at all interested in me maybe posting a thread about them, and showcasing the pictures, by all means, let me know, and I'll put them up as I can.

Just be patient guys, I'm not the only one that's super busy right now, and I'm sure Spark could use a vacation as much as I could. We're all pulling to improve things...just hold on a little bit longer. It'll be well worth the wait.

:)

I'm interested in the specs, and pics when they become available. I'm sure others would like to see whats going on as well.

I'm getting into this computer thing more & more, and I want to build my own system in the very near future.

_ender, any pointers you may have would be appreciated, and a good, reliable source for parts would also be good. Specifically, new motherboards of good quality, preferably with the processor already on board, along with the other goodies, including memory, ect.

When you have time, of course!

Thanks!

Kevin,
When will you have this fixed?

I'm running into the same thing....

Just wondering when it will get fixed too.........
