I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but if it has could someone please point the way?

Would a Cerakote coating on a Becker ruin or change the tempering?

Just curious

Thanks

Im not sure but Toooj would know ask him over at the Ka-Bar subforum

Looks like they cure it at 250 degrees, which shouldn't hurt the blades heat treat. I don't think you start to ruin the temper until around 400 degrees.

Benchmade uses Cerakote on the 810, so you can be sure that curing it does nothing to the temper.

That's not completly true. Different steels have different tempering temps. I'm not sure what temp they temper m4 at to achieve that hardness so I can't say. But if cerakote cures at 250 you should be fine.

K9 does professional Duracoat work. If I wanted a blade coated, I'd be sending it his way to get it done right.

In order to get their advertized Rockwell hardness with their steel, Ka-bar is probably tempering between 450-550F.
That's MY GUESS given the numbers for 1084, 1095 (non-CV), and O1. There are very few knife steels which would be tempered below 400F.

Even at 400F you'd just be relieving any residual stress in a gentle extra temper

Addressing the mention of M4:
One of M4's key features is that it holds its hardness at high temps (think HSS drill bits), so M4 is WAY up there, typically tempering in the 1000F range for knife hardnesses.

I am a Cerakote applicator and can tell you from years of experience that Cerakote will not ruin the temper of your blade. I have done TONS of knives with heat cured Cerakote and the required temps will not come close to doing anything to the temper. Cerakote is king as well.....I started with duracoat and threw it all away once I found Cerakote.

one day...

i have plans for a few blades
