Technical Question Regarding AXIS

Just wondering...

Now that I have my AXIS, what is the proper way to close it? Should I hold on to the locking pin all the way thought, or just disengage it, let go of the pin, and close it with my fingers? I mean, should hold the lock all the way down until the blade is closed, or just enough to disengage it?

This might seem irrelevant...but I'm just trying to get the most life out of my lock.

Thanks in advance.

Just disengage it enough to release the blade, and then while pivoting the blade the only contact will be betwen the smooth side of the tang and the smooth side of the AXIS pin/bolt, so I doubt there will be much wear on it. It's better to save wear on your fingers, eh?

Also, what I'm wondering about all this is...does it matter much, in terms of wear? Or is it pretty much insignificant?

What I'm currently doing is using my thumb and middle finger to pull back both sides of the lock, then using my index to swivel it until it's almost closed, and then releasing my thumb and middle finger so that it closes gradually. Is this acceptable?

to reiterate:
...I doubt there will be much wear on it.

Sure, your method is acceptable. It gets the knife closed, right? I just think it's a more work for the fingers than is necessary.

I prefer to pull back on the locking bar, then flick it closed with a snap of the wrist - more fun!

Thats how I do it, never had any problems

same here.

i use the locking bar to gently flick it open and closed. i think as long as you aren't flicking the thing with all your strength it should hold up fine.

I think the question of wear with the Axis lock is pretty much academic. It's designed to self-adjust for any possible wear (which should be minimal even with hard use). IMHO, it is virtually "wear-proof". Just enjoy the knife and don't worry about a thing. ;)

waaahhh!!! i don't own ANY knives with an AXIS lock! shoot, i haven't even had the opportunity to try one. i guess i'll just have to buy one, sight unseen, as a... uh... test! yeah, that's it!

For what it's worth, my buddy has had a BM 940 for the last three years and he's been flicking it open hard since day one. He uses it at work every day in construction and doesn't baby it in any way. It opens and locks up tight with barely (and I mean barely) any bladeplay. If anything it just gets slicker with time.

I pull back on the bar with my thumb or with my thumb and forefinger and then close the blade with a swipe against my leg. That way is both inobtrusive and keeps my fingers out of the way of the blade. It also works, modified slightly to suit the lock, with almost any lock you might encounter.
