So, doing some hunting in heavy cover ... I am used to going with a lot more people, where we can generally drive deer through an area. This time it will just be one other hunter and me. Wondering about some tried and true maneuvers that any of you has learned over the year to set up some good shots. We will not have stands.

The best that I have heard of is one guy walking at the top of a ridge and the other a good ways behind him halfway down the ridge.

This is a shotgun season, so we need to be relatively close to the deer.

the up ridge & half way down is a proven concept. moving very slowly & using a crow call will keep you abreast of each other. whitetails can be wary enough to let hasty hunters pass 40 feet from them. also mid ridge & bottom movements are productive. sling shots with ball bearings are good for stirring up really thick areas.

My Dad and I hunted that way for years and it always works,it takes a little time for 2 people that never hunted that way to get accustomed to each other and it helps a lot if both are very familiar with the lay of the land.In my case,I learned it from Dad a couple years after I started hunting.

Sounds like that may be the best way. I am used to more open terrain with high powered rifles. I liked hunting in a larger group in timber because it tends to drive the deer but not send them into a run. It seems like this might be a good way to get them up and moving, but not bolting. I only take stationary shots.

A lot depends on how well you know the land and the deer's movements through it. If you are aware of the major trails and escape routes they prefer, you can set up 1 hunter at 90 degrees to the wind near an escape route, and have the other hunter work into the wind, very slowly. This way both have a chance at a shot.

I've done this too but the last time I did it,I chased the same herd of deer past the guy I was hunting with 3 times that day and he never saw them.:grumpy:There were about 11 or 12 deer and 2 buck in it and I know they went past him within 50yds or so and he never saw them.

easy.. have someone setup up wind from the deer. he gets in unwinded. you walk in behind where you think the deer are down wind, they get a good whiff of you and dart towards the other fella. i bagged 3 does with 3 shots 12ga. buckshot 3 years ago with that very same method.

you HAVE to play the wind with short range weapons (bow, pistols, shotguns)
