Hi Folks

I know there are quite a few threads for Techno but I wasn't able to find one with Blade comparison; it is now available in XHP or S30V. And I been on the fence for this one for the longest time but just waiting and waiting for the price drop.

Which one would you get?

I don't have a Techno (yet), but I do have Spydies in s30v and xhp. The steels are pretty similar performance wise and there isn't much between them. Personally I would go for the xhp, I feel it has a bit better edge retention. The s30v is interesting too though and is almost like a sprint run because once they are all sold the next run will be back to xhp again in the winter.

The Techno is a fantastic knife.

Both steels are great and, having used both a lot, I doubt you will ever be able to tell the difference. My understanding purely from technical data is maybe S30V has a slight advantage, but my first-hand experience in using these two blade steels is they are for all intents and purposes the same. I would say if you can somehow get one cheaper than the other, go for the better price and enjoy that great little knife. There's no wrong choice here.

The Techno is the only "EDC" that I actually carry every day. It rides in my left pocket no matter what, and the rest of my collection has to share time on a rotation in my right pocket.

Enjoy!

I also flippin' love my Techo - so much so that I bought two (so I could have one as a backup).

I've seen a few dealers sell the S30V steel version but after hearing (reading) all the great reviews about CTS-HXP, I decided to go with that and so far I haven't been disappointed.

I have a few knives with S30V blades and I'm happy with those as well, but I've had to sharpen those earlier than my Techno. The CTS-HXP seems to maintain it's edge very well.

I consider the techno my perfect edc. It rides in my coin pocket everyday and is a real pleasure to use or just play with. Everything is perfect, centering, awesome lock up. I wonder if anything will come along to replace it... I couldn't imagine. Mine is xhp and at first I wasn't sure. But after sending to a fellow forum member, and having the factory edge brought in a bit and mirror polished it's a razor!

In my real world usage, I'd go XHP hands down. It behaves like a plain carbon steel blade, but is SS. I have had quite a few S30V blades roll on me, and it is a bit trickier to sharpen.

If I recall the s30v version is a mistake and is only being produced for one production run. So you may grab it for that alone. Don't quote me but I remember reading that somewhere

I'm quoting you. :) because I read the same thing..

to bleedingfinger: I did followed your thread and kudos to the forum bro that gave you that beautiful edge!

to cryoguy5272: that's what I heard as well but... knife center seems to list the Techno with both blade options: here is the link

Blade HQ also is listing the Techno with S30V blade, I am thinking Spyderco is phasing out XHP on the Techno?

Spyderco isn't phasing out XHP. There was a Spyderbyte newsletter (I forget which month) that explained this was a manufacturing whoops on their part, and that XHP would remain the default steel after all the S30v ones are sold out.

I would go for an S30v one simply due to the possibility of collector's value. I wouldn't expect it to appreciate or have much secondary-market value, but it would be a nice addition to any collection IMO. If that doesn't factor into your priorities at all, XHP has quite a following as a great steel.

Very interesting... I wonder just how many S30V techno's are out there

You guys been great! My verdict is to buy the S30V while they are available and get a good used one or get one on sale in XHP since these are regular productions. So if any one is parting one just pm me... I'm in Canada btw

Quoted from the February byte.

C158TIP TECHNO FOLDER FEATURES A TEMPORARY BLADE STEEL CHANGE

Have you always wanted a postage stamp printed upside down? Here’s your opportunity.

The C158TIP Techno is Spyderco / Marcin Slysz collaboration. When released, the blade steel for the model was Carpenter Steel’s CTS® XHP.

“Pobody’s Nerfect” - we goofed!

A single production run released this month has a Crucible CPM® S30V blade steel. Carpenter CTS XHP and Crucible CPM S30V are both steels produced here in the United States with the highest rating for cutting performance, edge retention and rust resistance. Once the run of “Oops Technos” are gone the model will return this autumn back to its original CTS XHP blade steel. The CPM S30V Techno is shipping now with no change in pricing from the CTS XHP version. MSRP: $319.95

There she is :D

thank you guys for helping me with this!

So happy with this one! Fit & finish is superb, blade is dead center, fluid action right out of box and 30% lock up! Perfect!

I been carrying the Ambitious for a week just to get myself used to the size, this one feels different, in a good way, it slice just as well even with the thick spine and I know it can do a lot more.

Now it's going to the safe, and I am going to hunt down the XHP version and use the heck out of it! This thing is too much fun!

And of course you guys want pics or it didn't happen ;)
