Was hoping maybe Codger could help me on this one.I have a mint Schrade Walden 15OT with Ted Williams etched on the blade. Trying to get the time period narrowed down.I believe the sheath pattern changed from the laced up waffle pattern to the rivet type in 1971,can you narrow it down anymore?,thanks,G.M

Sears purchased and sold some of the very first production of this pattern which had the patent pending marks. They came in the waffle design laced sheaths without rivets. These sheaths were short-lived for several reasons and were redesigned after only a year or two.

The next sheath deleted the tooling, used genuine cowhide instead of the former's reprocessed leather fiber, and added six eyelets to protect the lacing from the blade edge, negating the need for the "quick-fix" aluminum and fiberboard sheath tip protector (look inside if it hasn't been lost). The sheath without lacing, six eyelets replaced with five splatter rivets was next, then the sheath with an added welt, stitched with no edge rivets. The exact years of these changes isn't noted. Best-guess would be from the Schrade catalog illustrations, but most don't show the sheaths, and often were not updated anually. Most accurate roof, IMHO, would come from Sears catalogs from the years 1964-1973. I haven't obtained those editions yet, but I will. What year did they go from Ted Williams marks to Craftsman marks on this pattern?

I have one more sheath design which is an unexplained enigma. It is original to the knife but very uncommon. It was hard to find a decent example. And I still don't have a good camera.

The low serial number and patent pending marks indicate manufacture before the Henry Baer design patent issued (November of 1965), thus it would have come with the waffle imprinted sheath above. It would have been a Sears #10600, the same as my example in the red/orange Sears Ted WIlliams box above.
