teeth on a knife?

how does everyone feel about serrated RATs?
good / bad? how do you sharpen?
worth the cutting real estate?
just wanNa know before I purchase.

I read somewhere recently about serations causing the knife to "bind" upon withdrawl between ribs, if thats a concern of yours!

I got a serr once. it cut rope -very- well. however. sharpening them is a pain, and chews through the blade if you do find a way to do it. I dislike them. keep a plain blade well-kept, and you'll be fine.

I've heard that the RAT serrations are much easier to sharpen than other knives. I wouldn't know though.

I have always had combo blades, until I bought an Emerson Commander from a local knife shop. It was a plain edge. 8 years later I have never once wished I had gotten the serrated version.

I bought a RAT-3 with the serrations and after several months of daily carry, I am going to switch out for my HEST. I find the serrations just get in the way, and cause the blade to bind up wile cutting. I bought my RC-4 w/o serrations and love it.

I am definately not a combo edge guy any more.

Just my .02

A very sharp plain edge is my favorite, just cause it works for me. Some find they prefer a full serrated blade, but I never liked them. This has been said countless times on these forums,"find what works for you, and use it.";)

IMO serrations are for people who don't know how or aren't willing to take care of their knives. If you're not going to sharpen it or you plan on using it as a screw driver, then go with serrations.

HAHA, that's a funny visual.:D

On work knives? sure .... i got a few full length seration knives , a few combos ... there built for a very special task and thats all they do..... all my carry knives etc... are plain edge... easier to maintain , and as sharp as i keep em it does just as well as any of my serated knives in the past....

I do not care for them. I have had two knives with serrations and removed them from both blades, a Vic Trekker and a RC6. RC does have well designed serrations, but I do not like them in general.

Agreed

Seconded.

--at least for EDC and general use purposes. I have an Ontario RAT 1 folder that Dylan was kind enough to give away and the combo edge on that served me VERY well while slicing up boxes when I moved into my new apartment a few months ago.

I think that serrations work great for certain tasks, but that those tasks very rarely are ones that I need to do. Another key factor is the shape of those serrations. Plain edge is plain edge, but there are so many styles of serrations that it can be very difficult to make direct comparisons.

Different strokes for different folks, ya' know? :)

I only ever owned one knife with serrations, and they were always in the way somehow.
My husband however used to dive, and it seems underwater rope / net cutting is really easier to do with serrations. But that was the only use he had a knife for, thus he only had this one knife.

The only serrated knife I enjoy using is the one in the kitchen used to cut bread.

That is the only place i use my serrated knife...in the kitchen. It does come in handy there and works well for what i use it, i have to admit that, but fully serrated edge is way too limited IMO. CE on the other hand is not bad at all if you need multi tasker.

I have both P.E. and combo edge knives and if it cuts through stuff, im rather non preferential.
It really just comes down to the subjectivity of preference, and the facilitation of your desires.
Unless your just looking for the popular girl to take to the ball; regardless of however many R&P'ers pipe in your not going to have your answer until 'you' find that answer with personal experience.
There was a thread in regards to P.E. and combos sometime back. I think it broke into two segregated parties, those who are superior and use plain edge blades and those who suck and use combos; (Paraphrasing of course.)

I sharpen my rc-4 serrated like a plain edge and touch up the inside when needed. the knife is awesom and works great however I don't think I will buy another serrated rc knife. It chops just fine, cuts great and sharpens easy so I just don't see any advantage and will stick to the pe's next time around....

I pass on any blade with serrations. Some folks think they help cut rope, but a razor sharp plain edge does a lot better than 1 inch of serrations ever will. For thicker rope use a baton on the blade.
